A former paramedic who came forward with information related to the Tamara Greene stripper death case will seek $4.5 million in damages after a judge today upheld his whistle-blower lawsuit default judgment against the city of Detroit, his attorney said.
City of Detroit Corporation Counsel Krystal A. Crittendon said the city plans to appeal and expects to have the default judgment set aside.
Birmingham attorney Norman Yatooma said the city fired emergency medical technician Cenobio Chapa on Oct. 24 — one day after he gave media interviews in which he said he saw an injured woman at Detroit Receiving Hospital in the fall of 2002 who claimed to have been assaulted by Carlita Kilpatrick, the wife of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.
Detroit Strip Clubs: Conyers Avoids Corruption Controversy
June 17, 2009 at 8:37 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No CommentsDetroit (WWJ) — Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers was back at work Wednesday afternoon, despite reports that she has been given a pre-indictment letter in connection with a federal corruption investigation.
Sources say Conyers is identified as “Council Member A” in federal documents released Monday afternoon that show the council member received money in connection with a business transaction. Conyers has not yet been formally charged.
Conyers spent Wednesday morning at her home.
“I am not going to talk to you. I’ve got nothing to say to you,” Conyers, the wife of U.S. Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., told reporters outside her home where she was seen at times on the roof with contractors.
The Rev. Loyce Lester visited her but also declined to speak to reporters.
Conyers accused the news media of “harassing” her and neighbors, then rode to City Hall where she led a hearing about possible restrictions at strip clubs before council President Ken Cockrel Jr. took over.

A Detroit Fire Department EMS worker won a default judgment today in his whistleblower lawsuit, saying he had been fired after reporting that a woman at Detroit Receiving Hospital said she had been assaulted by the wife of then-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.
Paramedic Cenobio Chapa filed the whistleblower lawsuit against the City of Detroit and its fire department after being fired Oct. 24, a day after his affidavit to Birmingham attorney Norman Yatooma went public.
…
Chapa said in an affidavit released Oct. 23 by Yatooma, the attorney representing the family of slain stripper Tamara Greene, that the woman he saw in the fall of 2002 in a wheelchair was loud and emotional. He said she claimed to have been physically attacked by Carlita Kilpatrick.

Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers showed up at a council meeting this afternoon apparently without any plea deal in the City Hall corruption case.
Two sources familiar with the case said there would be no plea deal or indictments coming today involving Conyers.
Conyers was all business at the meeting in which council members discussed strip club-related ordinances.
She said the city cant make strip clubs go away, just like the media. We cant make them go away,” she said. “They dont have the right to harass us, but they have the right to be here.
After the meeting, Conyers, who appeared to be upbeat, refused to answer questions about the City Hall scandal. But she took questions about the strip club matter.
Detroit Strip Clubs: Bribery probe closes in on Conyers
June 17, 2009 at 2:48 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No CommentsThe prospect of a Conyers indictment means Detroit remains mired in scandal four months after former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick completed 99 days in the Wayne County Jail on obstruction of justice and assault charges. A wide-ranging FBI investigation of City Hall continues.
It also could be a political embarrassment to her husband, who is chairman of the committee that oversees the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Other matters involving Monica Conyers that have interested federal investigators include:
• An alleged shakedown involving political consultant and former Conyers aide Sam Riddle, Conyers and the representatives of the Zoo Bar in Detroit’s Greektown area. Principals of the strip club have told a federal grand jury that Riddle asked for a $25,000 bribe on behalf of Conyers to help with the transfer of an operating permit, court records show. Riddle, who denied the allegations in January, could not be reached Tuesday.

Attorney says Detroit’s threat to end liquor sales if dancers don’t cover up is all-out war
Christine MacDonald / The Detroit News
Detroit –Detroit may soon deliver an ultimatum to its strip clubs: Cover up or no booze.
The City Council on Wednesday is set to weigh a broad crackdown that would ban alcohol at clubs with topless dancing. The new rules also would stop lap dancing, close VIP rooms and force dancers to wear opaque pasties — even at dry clubs.
The rules are certain to reignite debate over the city’s 31 topless bars, and owners are vowing a fight.
…
But city staffers point to state and national court cases that support the legality of an alcohol ban. Richard Mack, an attorney and member of Perfecting Church, said the city must reject its status as Michigan’s strip club capital and home to 31 of the state’s 81 topless bars.
Detroit Strip Clubs: Penguins fans cheer Stanley Cup champions
June 17, 2009 at 2:48 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No CommentsHe said a couple hundred people had visited by 10 a.m., and he said the store has been getting orders for team items from all over the world.
The most popular item by far is a $20 black shirt that says “Steel City — One Year — One City. Two world champions. America’s best sports town.”
Starbucks in Market Square had a line to the door at 9:45 this morning. Lisa Schroeder, a supervisor, said the coffee shop planned for more business, adding extra staff and supplies, but had nearly sold out of pastries.
“That usually doesn’t happen,” she said. She thought today’s parade was busier than the Steelers event, with fans stopping as early as 5:30.
Other business were also hoping for some patronage from the crowd. A plane above the throng pulled a sign: “Congrats Penguins. Blush Gentlemen’s Club. Open 12.”
Detroit Strip Clubs: Appeals court overturns Detroit zoning rules on adult businesses
June 17, 2009 at 2:48 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No CommentsThe 6th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled against the city of Detroit in a case brought by the owners of a topless bar, concluding that zoning restrictions put in place by the city on adult establishments are unconstitutional. You can view the full ruling (PDF) here.
It’s a rather unusual case that began in 1998 when the state of Michigan began issuing a new type of license, a Topless Activity Permit (TAP), for adult establishments with liquor licenses. The original owners of a topless club then called “Legends” applied for and got a TAP for their business.
The city of Detroit then changed its zoning ordinances to prevent the opening of businesses with a TAP license within the “central business district” – i.e. downtown Detroit. But because this business was preexisting, it was “grandfathered” in under the old rules and allowed to continue to operate.

ORION TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Pole dancing is one of the latest workout crazes sweeping the nation and metro Detroit. However, some say the sexy moves are stripping one community of its dignity.
A new pole dancing studio is definitely raising some eyebrows in Orion Township, but the owner says it is a great form of fitness and a lot of fun with your clothes on.
Elona Gano has been pole dancing for the last four years. She decided to open her own studio two weeks ago. “My goal is strength and toning and while some of the moves are the same as say a strip club, the intent behind it is absolutely different,” she said.
