Detroit Strip Clubs: Council should dance around strip clubs

September 23, 2009 at 6:13 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

At a hearing before the Detroit City Council on Tuesday, workers from the citys 33 strip clubs opposed the measure, with employees testifying that their jobs provide crucial financial support for their families. Are strip club activities demeaning and exploitive? Probably so, but so are a lot of things in society, including some advertising, that we dont ban. Many successful women have put themselves through college or law school by dancing. Its not, in general, governments job to impose a moral code on consenting adults. Closing strip clubs and pushing the activity out of regulated businesses and onto the street would make it more dangerous — and no less demeaning.

Leave strip clubs alone, Detroit City Council told

DJs, dancers and strip club owners went before the Detroit City Council on Tuesday, asking that the city allow them to continue in the adult entertainment business without additional government oversight.
Many said they are putting themselves through school. Others said they are the only providers for their families. Most said they have no choice but to dance.
“All of us are young. There’s nothing else out there. There’s no jobs,” said Valentina Anderson, who said she is a single parent.
For years the council and city officials have clashed over how to craft ordinances to regulate Detroit’s 33 strip clubs.

The council hired Tennessee attorney Scott Bergthold, an expert in shutting down strip clubs, as a consultant, for $75,000.

Strip club crackdown hearing draws dozens

Detroit — The issue of whether morality can be legislated took center stage when more than 100 people attended Tuesday’s Detroit City Council hearing on the possible crackdown on strip clubs.
Workers from the city’s 33 topless clubs voiced their opposition to the possible changes, saying a ban on lap dances and VIP rooms would force them out of business and leave more city residents unemployed.
“I take care of my family,” said Omni Jenkins, 21, a dancer at a local club. “By cutting us off and making up all these rules, it’s going to cause crime rates to go up. It affects not only the entertainment community, but Detroit as a whole.”

The city has settled two federal lawsuits involving strip clubs recently for almost $670,000. The clubs say they bring in more than $3 million annually to Detroit in property taxes and fees and employ nearly 6,700 people.

Exotic dancers took center stage at Detroit’s city council meeting.
The city is considering a new ordinance that will greatly restrict the city’s 33 topless clubs. Some club owners say the new rules may put them out of business.
A dancer by the name of Dream’ pleaded with the council to let her keep her job.
“I got a family. I got a family I got to take care of,” a teary eyed Dream told the city council, “We not trying to take you guys jobs from all of you. If you all could just reconsider and think about this again…that would mean a lot to us”
The proposal is backed by a coalition of religious groups. Richard Mack spoke for the religious group.

Detroit City Council Weighs Banning Lap Dances
Tue, Sep 22 2009 05:30pm PDT
DETROIT — City Council here is grappling over the language of a new ordinance that could heavily regulate the city’s 33 strip clubs.
The proposed changes follow a court battle in which a federal judge struck down Detroit’s strip-club ordinance where they could open up. The judge ordered the city regulations rewritten.
But the fear in the adult entertainment community here is genuine because lap dances and VIP rooms could be banned with the new ordinance.
Also dancers could be kept six feet away from customers, on stages at least 18 inches high and in rooms at least 600 square feet. And most club employees would have to pass background checks.
More than 100 workers at the city’s clubs voiced their opposition Tuesday to the full City Council.
