Sexually suggestive billboards intended to lure customers into topless bars, adult bookstores and other risqué businesses are not the sort of images state Sen. Tupac Hunter says he wants his 9-year-old son, or any child, to see as they ride down Michigan roads.
“Adults can be adults,” the Detroit Democrat says, “but when kids are exposed to this type of indecent material, I think it’s important for us to stand up and draw the line.”
Such signs on 8 Mile Road in Detroit prompted Hunter to introduce a bill, which the state Senate passed last month, that would restrict billboards for sexually oriented businesses to listing the business name and type, location and hours of operation. The bill is being reviewed by the House Transportation Committee, and Tupac says he hopes it will go to the House floor and become law by year’s end. Callie Collins, Hunter’s chief of staff, says some of the billboards on 8 Mile Road have already been taken down.

He grew up in Washington, D.C., the son of a contractor father and a homemaker mother. After graduating from Syracuse University, Bing played nine seasons for the Detroit Pistons. During that time, he was the rare All-Star talent who understood that there was life after basketball. In the off-season, he worked as a bank teller and manager, grasping for his next career. In 1980 he formed Bing Steel and rode the wave of automotive-industry interest in cultivating a base of black and female suppliers. He was, essentially, a bridge between Detroit’s growing black middle class and the region’s then largely white business élite.
Coleman Young, Detroit’s first black mayor, urged Bing to consider a run for city hall in 1993. Bing wasn’t interested. DFT’s ‘Big Fan’ focuses on football obsessive

On the job, he’s a faceless parking structure attendant. But listeners to a sports talk show know him as “Paul from Staten Island,” whose nightly rants about his favorite team, the New York Giants, sound off-the-cuff but are actually meticulously scripted in a spiral notebook.
Ultimately Paul’s loyalty to the Giants is tested when he is beaten to a pulp by one of his gridiron heroes during a strip club skirmish. Paul refuses to press charges because that would keep the quarterback from playing in Sunday’s game.
“Big Fan” (***), playing this weekend at the Detroit Film Theatre, is a funny, frightening look at sports fandom. In his mid-30s and still living with Mom, Paul (played by comedian Patton Oswalt) could be easy to write off as pathetic. The movie slyly shows what he might have become by offering glimpses of his brother and sister. One is an ambulance chaser; the other is married to the manager of a big box store.

WYANDOTTE – A longtime 27th District Court probation officer has been charged with soliciting sex from an 18-year-old woman.
Robert Joseph Samson, 60, of Wyandotte was arraigned Tuesday at the 23rd District Court in Taylor on four felony counts of soliciting criminal sexual conduct.
Detective Sgt. Ken Walker of the Michigan State Police Metro South Post in Taylor said that Samson stands accused of propositioning the teenage probationer to exchange sexual favors for a reduction in fees associated with probation costs.
When he was allegedly ready to have sex with her Monday night after a drug class in Taylor, state police troopers moved in and arrested him.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Judge affirms Warren’s ban on topless lounges in downtown area
September 24, 2009 at 12:01 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No CommentsBut an attorney for the Warren-based entertainment company behind the November 2007 suit says the city shouldn’t rejoice yet: his client can– and likely will– challenge the judge’s Sept. 17 ruling in the state Court of Appeals.
“I’m very surprised that the city of Warren would issue a press release … to suggest victory when there is still so much that can potentially occur. It’s very surprising,” said attorney Jay Schwartz, who represents plaintiffs, Big Dipper Entertainment, LLC and Aquarius Investments, LLC.
“It’s almost as if they are inviting more litigation.”
Fouts said the city isn’t against adult establishments– there already is a topless bar at Mound and Martin roads — but these clubs don’t belong in its downtown district, which stretches from Interstate 696 to 14 Mile and between Van Dyke and Mound.
