Detroit Strip Clubs: Another ex-Detroit cop alleges cover-up in Tamara ‘Strawberry …

Odell Godbold, a former Detroit homicide investigator, filed a lawsuit Thursday against the city and three of his former bosses, alleging he was demoted for investigating the murder of stripper Tamara “Strawberry” Greene.
In the lawsuit, Godbold accuses his bosses of protecting “an elected official by covering up information regarding the official’s connection to Greene,” claiming that in 2005 his unit was closed abruptly and he was demoted months after turning over his case file to the major crimes unit inspector.

Rumors have been floating around for years that Greene was executed after dancing at a 2002 party hosted by former-Detroit Mayor Kilpatrick at the Manoogian Mansion, but after investigating the matter, Attorney General Mike Cox called the party an urban legend.
However, Godbold claims Greene and an off-duty Detroit police officer moonlighting as a stripper performed at the party, according to the Detroit News, and says the off-duty officer was assaulted at the party.

Detroit Strip Clubs: New lawsuit filed in Tamara Greene case

September 25, 2009 at 5:01 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

Another former homicide detective, retired Lt. Alvin Bowman, alleged in an earlier lawsuit that he was transferred out of homicide for attempting to investigate Greene’s killing. Bowman said in a sworn affidavit filed in the Greene case that he believed Greene was killed by a Detroit police officer. Aside from the caliber of handgun used, Bowman has not revealed what evidence he has to back up that claim.
Kilpatrick and other top city and police officials have denied the allegations, and police brass insist the Greene killing remains under active investigation.
Godbold, represented by Bingham Farms attorney Charles Gottlieb, alleges he learned that Greene and an off-duty Detroit police officer who moonlighted as a stripper performed at a 2002 party at the Manoogian Mansion. It was the off-duty female officer, not Greene, who was assaulted at the party and received a three-week leave of absence to recover from her injuries, the lawsuit alleges.
That account is consistent with one given by another retired Detroit homicide detective, Mike Carlisle, who told The Detroit News in April that he learned an off-duty Detroit police officer moonlighting as a stripper performed at the alleged party.

Detroit Escorts: WYANDOTTE: Court worker charged with soliciting sex commits suicide

September 25, 2009 at 1:37 am | In Detroit escorts | No Comments

By Jim Kasuba
WYANDOTTE – A 27th District Court probation officer who was charged with soliciting sex from an 18-year-old woman has taken his own life.
Police Chief Daniel Grant confirmed he received a telephone call from the Oscoda County Sheriff’s Department at about 4 p.m. Thursday stating that the body of Robert Joseph Samson was found alongside a road in the northeast Michigan county. He was dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
On Tuesday, the longtime probation officer stood accused of propositioning a teenage probationer to exchange sexual favors for a reduction in fees associated with probation costs. When he was allegedly ready to have sex with her Monday night after a drug class in Taylor, state police troopers moved in to arrest him.
Samson was free on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond. At the time he committed suicide, investigators were seeking other current or former probationers who might have had a similar experience with him.

Detroit Strip Clubs: States eye explicit billboards

States eye explicit billboards
By Ron Barnett, USA TODAY
Sexually suggestive billboards intended to lure customers into topless bars, adult bookstores and other risqué businesses are not the sort of images state Sen. Tupac Hunter says he wants his 9-year-old son, or any child, to see as they ride down Michigan roads.
“Adults can be adults,” the Detroit Democrat says, “but when kids are exposed to this type of indecent material, I think it’s important for us to stand up and draw the line.”
Such signs on 8 Mile Road in Detroit prompted Hunter to introduce a bill, which the state Senate passed last month, that would restrict billboards for sexually oriented businesses to listing the business name and type, location and hours of operation. The bill is being reviewed by the House Transportation Committee, and Tupac says he hopes it will go to the House floor and become law by year’s end. Callie Collins, Hunter’s chief of staff, says some of the billboards on 8 Mile Road have already been taken down.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Mayor Dave Bing: Can He Stop the Slide?

September 24, 2009 at 5:48 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

Bing’s ability to focus on the long view is a consistent theme of his biography. He grew up in Washington, D.C., the son of a contractor father and a homemaker mother. After graduating from Syracuse University, Bing played nine seasons for the Detroit Pistons. During that time, he was the rare All-Star talent who understood that there was life after basketball. In the off-season, he worked as a bank teller and manager, grasping for his next career. In 1980 he formed Bing Steel and rode the wave of automotive-industry interest in cultivating a base of black and female suppliers. He was, essentially, a bridge between Detroit’s growing black middle class and the region’s then largely white business élite.
Coleman Young, Detroit’s first black mayor, urged Bing to consider a run for city hall in 1993. Bing wasn’t interested. But after the national embarrassment of Kilpatrick’s tenure in addition to his crimes, there were rumors of parties with strippers at Detroit’s official mayoral residence leaders of the region’s …

DFT’s ‘Big Fan’ focuses on football obsessive
BY JOHN MONAGHANFREE PRESS SPECIAL WRITER
On the job, he’s a faceless parking structure attendant. But listeners to a sports talk show know him as “Paul from Staten Island,” whose nightly rants about his favorite team, the New York Giants, sound off-the-cuff but are actually meticulously scripted in a spiral notebook.
Ultimately Paul’s loyalty to the Giants is tested when he is beaten to a pulp by one of his gridiron heroes during a strip club skirmish. Paul refuses to press charges because that would keep the quarterback from playing in Sunday’s game.
“Big Fan” (***), playing this weekend at the Detroit Film Theatre, is a funny, frightening look at sports fandom. In his mid-30s and still living with Mom, Paul (played by comedian Patton Oswalt) could be easy to write off as pathetic. The movie slyly shows what he might have become by offering glimpses of his brother and sister. One is an ambulance chaser; the other is married to the manager of a big box store.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Judge affirms Warren’s ban on topless lounges in downtown area

September 24, 2009 at 12:01 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

But an attorney for the Warren-based entertainment company behind the November 2007 suit says the city shouldn’t rejoice yet: his client can– and likely will– challenge the judge’s Sept. 17 ruling in the state Court of Appeals.
“I’m very surprised that the city of Warren would issue a press release … to suggest victory when there is still so much that can potentially occur. It’s very surprising,” said attorney Jay Schwartz, who represents plaintiffs, Big Dipper Entertainment, LLC and Aquarius Investments, LLC.
“It’s almost as if they are inviting more litigation.”
Fouts said the city isn’t against adult establishments– there already is a topless bar at Mound and Martin roads — but these clubs don’t belong in its downtown district, which stretches from Interstate 696 to 14 Mile and between Van Dyke and Mound.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Council should dance around strip clubs

September 23, 2009 at 6:13 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

At a hearing before the Detroit City Council on Tuesday, workers from the citys 33 strip clubs opposed the measure, with employees testifying that their jobs provide crucial financial support for their families. Are strip club activities demeaning and exploitive? Probably so, but so are a lot of things in society, including some advertising, that we dont ban. Many successful women have put themselves through college or law school by dancing. Its not, in general, governments job to impose a moral code on consenting adults. Closing strip clubs and pushing the activity out of regulated businesses and onto the street would make it more dangerous — and no less demeaning.

Leave strip clubs alone, Detroit City Council told
BY NAOMI R. PATTONFREE PRESS STAFF WRITER
DJs, dancers and strip club owners went before the Detroit City Council on Tuesday, asking that the city allow them to continue in the adult entertainment business without additional government oversight.
Many said they are putting themselves through school. Others said they are the only providers for their families. Most said they have no choice but to dance.
“All of us are young. There’s nothing else out there. There’s no jobs,” said Valentina Anderson, who said she is a single parent.
For years the council and city officials have clashed over how to craft ordinances to regulate Detroit’s 33 strip clubs.

The council hired Tennessee attorney Scott Bergthold, an expert in shutting down strip clubs, as a consultant, for $75,000.
