Detroit Strip Clubs: Riddle wants Convertino to represent him in corruption case
October 27, 2009 at 8:00 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No CommentsRiddle faces 10 felony charges, well more than anyone else snared in the region’s latest corruption probe that also ensnared former Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers. Riddle once served as an aide to Conyers.
Convertino could not immediately be reached for comment, but Riddle said he has agreed to take the case. Convertino also had been representing former state Rep. Mary Waters, who is accused along with Riddle of bribing Southfield City Councilman William Lattimore with $12,500 to speed approval for a pawnshop relocation and expansion.
We will work through any conflict issues, Riddle said.
Federal authorities allege Riddle spread bribes to help a pawnshop in Southfield, and hand-delivered the cash that purchased Conyers’ vote on a billion-dollar sludge contract. It was Riddle, agents allege, who acted as fixer for a restaurant owner, a strip club agent and a real estate developer to buy influence in Detroit.
Detroit Strip Clubs: Lifelong Detroiter weighs in on November election
October 27, 2009 at 8:00 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No CommentsAs a lifelong Detroiter, I have truly seen the good, the bad and definitely the ugly. Born and raised in a city full of poverty stricken communities I have seen my fair share of bad times. But I have never seen times like these.
Detroit is on the verge of a state takeover if it can’t get its finances in order quick.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the city has a 17.3 percent unemployment rate, the Detroit Public Schools is struggling to stay afloat and implement new ways to curve the dismal dropout rate percentage. Detroit is ranked number one in violent crime, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Councilwoman Monica Conyers was indicted on bribery charges in federal court. Detroit is on its third mayor in a year and no one seems to know if there was really a party at the Manoogian Mansion that led to the death of stripper Tamara Greene.
Detroit Adult Entertainment: Three men jailed over Coventry and Leamington brothels
October 27, 2009 at 3:37 pm | In Detroit adult entertainment | No CommentsCheung Zhao Su, Ziqian Liu and Bochao Nan were arrested after West Mercia Police smashed an organised crime network in which women were trafficked into the UK from China to brothels in Coventry, Leamington, Kidderminster, Worcester, Birmingham and Cheltenham between October 2006 and September 2008.
Another three men and a woman have already been sentenced.
A hearing at Hereford Crown Court heard how the men used a “chicken-house” system, moving the women on from one to another.
Laura Hobson, prosecuting, told the court that suspicion was aroused about a brothel in Worcester when the landlord heard reports of men hanging around outside. He found baby oil and condoms in a room lit by a red light bulb and saw “a Chinese woman dressed only in a dressing gown”.
Chinese restaurant owner
Su, aged 41, and Liu, 24, both
of Weoley Castle, Birmingham,
admitted two counts of trafficking within the UK for sexual exploitation, along with controlling prostitution for gain. They were ordered to serve 4½ years and 2½ years respectively.
Detroit Adult Entertainment: Kiffmeyer relationship with bank not interesting enough?
October 27, 2009 at 3:37 pm | In Detroit adult entertainment | No CommentsPat Pheifer of the Star Tribune offers a portrait of the St. Paul Police Department’s Offenders Prostitution Program, better known as john school. The program is run by an organization called Breaking Free (here’s its web page), which Pheifer describes as “a St. Paul organization that helps women escape prostitution and its accompanying lifestyle,” and the day-long program is intended to demonstrate to convicted johns that prostitution is not a victimless crime. The story is also interesting for the discussion that ensued, which seems to be a product of the Strib’s moderating policy: a complicated and mostly civil debate has broken out as to possible solutions to prostitution, including legalizing it, and a comment accusing a local pastor of being a john looks to have been swiftly removed. It’s very strange to see a comment-section discussion at a newspaper that actually adds value to the original story, rather than simply being an unregulated zone in which partisans hijack every issue to promote their talking points. If you want to do that now, you’re probably going to have to be a politician.

AG: Man Engaged In Explicit Online Chats
POSTED: Monday, October 26, 2009
UPDATED: 2:29 pm EDT October 26, 2009
DETROIT — A 38-year-old man from Pontiac is accused of soliciting sex to a minor online after the Michigan Attorney General’s office said he engaged in explicit conversations with an undercover state investigator.
Attorney General Mike Cox said Monday that Russell Lee Bennett thought he was having a conversation with a 14-year-old girl, and made arrangements to meet her in Detroit.
But Cox said state investigators and volunteers from the organization Perverted Justice were staging an Internet child predator sting.
Cox said the Bennett used the screen name “uchi_deshi2000,” said he was a karate instructor and made arrangements to meet who he thought was the girl at a fast food restaurant in Detroit.

October 26, 2009 at 3:00 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No CommentsThe Detroit Free Press reports a unique case of a bar admitting liability in a DUI wreck caused by a patron who left the establishment.
The Pantheon Club, a topless bar in Dearborn, has admitted it was at least partially responsible for over-serving a patron. The man allegedly was vomiting before be passed out drunk at the club. He then left the club in the driver’s seat of his vehicle.
Jackson caused an accident involving 9 vehicles and injuring 3 when he left The Pantheon Club that night. The family of victim Kenneth Brzenzinski, who died in the crash, is now suing the club in relation to an accident that occurred in March of 2006. BY JOHN WISELYFREE PRESS STAFF WRITER
A Dearborn topless bar that served a man shots and beers until he passed out and vomited has admitted liability for the death the man caused in a subsequent car wreck.
The Pantheon Club on Michigan Avenue is being sued by the family of Kenneth Brzenzinski, who died March 20, 2006, in a nine-vehicle crash that also injured three people, including a pregnant woman. The driver, Ronnie S. Jackson, 38, of Belleville also acknowledged liability and is serving prison time after pleading no contest to second-degree murder.
“What’s left now is the award of compensation to the family,” Wayne County Circuit Judge John Murphy told potential jurors last week.
Detroit Strip Clubs: Cox defends handling of probe into Manoogian
October 25, 2009 at 4:12 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No CommentsCoxs name has resurfaced because Birmingham attorney Norman Yatooma is deposing three state police investigators who claimed in 2004 that the attorney general impeded their investigation into rumors of a wild party at the Manoogian Mansion that ended in the assault of a stripper.
Yatooma is representing Greenes family in a lawsuit against former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and city officials, claiming they conspired to derail an investigation into Greenes 2003 drive-by killing. Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans recently turned the investigation into Greenes murder over to the multi-jurisdictional Violent Crimes Task Force.
Cox said he closed the investigation into the party rumors and allegations of wrongdoing by Kilpatricks bodyguards after 130 witnesses had been interviewed and 90 subpoenas had been served. He said the state police interviewed 55 additional witnesses before their investigation ended.
The most popular version of the never-proven party rumor was that the mayors wife, Carlita Kilpatrick, happened upon the party and assaulted a stripper with a baseball bat.
Detroit Strip Clubs: Investor: $10K won Kilpatrick’s help
October 24, 2009 at 5:00 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No CommentsKilpatrick, who was released in February after serving 99 days on obstruction of justice-related charges connected to a police whistle-blower trial, has since moved to Texas and could not be reached for comment Friday. His Detroit attorney, James C. Thomas, did not return phone calls.
Papas did not respond to a message left on his cell phone.
The deals later fell through and the money was never actually paid to Orecchio’s AA Capital.
AA Capital, an investment company based in Chicago, was shut down after federal lawsuits brought in Illinois by the Securities and Exchange Commission and the U.S. Department of Labor alleged Orecchio misspent nearly $11 million in investments by Detroit-area union pension funds on lavish travel and entertainment and diverted money into a company Orecchio controlled that operated the Crazy Horse strip club in Detroit.
