Detroit Strip Clubs: Soupy Sales Death: Farewell to the Pieman

October 23, 2009 at 5:24 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

Despite persistent urban legends, Sales never did blue material for the kids though his staff did play a prank in which a topless balloon artiste danced to “The Stripper” while the on-set monitor indicated that the career-ending nudity was live on the air. (It wasn’t.) He did make trouble for himself on New Year’s Day 1965, when, annoyed by having to work on a holiday, he impishly instructed kids to tiptoe into their parents’ bedroom, take out “green pieces of paper with pictures of guys with beards” and send them to his New York station. The punch line: “And you know what I’m gonna send you? A postcard from Puerto Rico.” For that he got suspended. He said that the kids were hipper than his bosses: many sent him Monopoly money. One adult enclosed a few dollars and wrote: “Now go to Puerto Rico.”

Detroit Adult Entertainment: Detroit area First Amendment battle spills into state Senate

October 23, 2009 at 3:25 pm | In Detroit adult entertainment | No Comments

A neighborhood battle over a billboard for an adult entertainment facility in Detroit has spilled into the state Senate.
A report in the Macomb Daily says Sen. Hunter Tupac, a Detroit Democrat, has introduce legislation which will limit what can appear on billboard advertisements for adult entertainment locations such as bars, ‘gentleman’s clubs,’ and the likes. Under Hunter’s legislation, the businesses would be limited to providing the name, address, telephone number and hours of operation. The businesses would not be allowed to have images on the billboards.
The legislation is being co-sponsored Detroit Democrat Hansen Clarke.
Neighbors of an area off 8 Mile say the offender in this situation is the Penthouse Gentlemen Club.
“We are fighting to keep our community safe,” said [Mary] Little [former president of the neighborhood group]. “Our neighborhood is turning into a Las Vegas strip and we don’t want it invaded by pictures of women with their breasts hanging out.”

Attorney General Mike Cox on accusation he interfered with murder investigation of Detroit stripper Tamara Greene: ‘This is crap’
October 23, 2009, 7:28AM
Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, a candidate for governor, called an accusation he interfered with the murder investigation of Detroit stripper Tamara Greene “crap” (well, actually he first called it “bull$&#%,” but that would have made for an odd-looking headline).
Michigan State Police investigator Mark Krebs testified yesterday that Cox interfered with his investigation into an alleged party at the Manoogian Mansion in 2002.
Greene, a stripper known as “Strawberry”, allegedly danced at the party, and when she was murdered months later, rumors swirled she was killed to cover up her involvement.
Krebs, testifying in a civil suit filed by Greene’s family against former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and other city officials, said Cox wouldn’t issue requested subpoenas and directed detectives not to interview Carlita Kilpatrick, who allegedly crashed the party unexpectedly and began to attack one of the dancers.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Cop: Dancer slaying coverup

Yatooma said that Parra gave the same testimony to his office today.
Its more of the horrifying same, Yatooma said. Its memorialized as evidence. What our witnesses are saying, they are saying under oath.
Parra gave the testimony to attorney Mike Stefani on Sept. 3 in a separate lawsuit brought by Officer Ira Todd, who was kicked out of the task force after he claims he established a link between alleged hit man Vincent Smothers and a reputed Kentucky drug dealer who boasted to cops that he had close ties to former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.
The Tamara Greene case came up during Parras deposition with Stefani. Greene, nicknamed Strawberry, was a stripper who was shot and killed April 30, 2003, in a west side Detroit drive-by killing. Her murder remains unsolved.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Detroit cop: Greene case was hindered

Parra also testified that about three weeks after that incident, on April 19, 2008, he was observing an interrogation of confessed hit man Vincent Smothers when Tolbert interrupted the questioning and shut it down, Yatooma said. The questioning of Smothers by Officer Ira Todd was stopped by Tolbert soon after Smothers said he was about to drop a “bombshell” that Parra believed related to former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, Yatooma said.
Second Deputy Chief John Roach, a spokesman for the department, had no comment on Yatooma’s account of Parra’s deposition testimony.
Parra is a member of a multi-jurisdictional Violent Crimes Task Force that is now investigating the Greene homicide.
Greene, who was linked to a rumored but never proven stripper party at the Manoogian Mansion in the fall of 2002, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Detroit on April 30, 2003. Her family is suing Kilpatrick and top city and police officials, alleging the investigation into her killing was obstructed for political reasons.

Detroit Escorts: Treasury Orders Executive Pay Cut

October 23, 2009 at 1:48 am | In Detroit escorts | No Comments

Treasury official Kenneth Feinberg said that the salaries for the top 25 executives are being cut by as much as 90 percent starting next month. The slash in pay will be felt by executives at Bank of America Corp., American International Group Inc., Citigroup Inc., General Motors, GMAC, Chrysler and Chrysler Financial — all of whom were the happy recipients of TARP money.
While it may seem like sour grapes for us to be reveling in the misery of others, bear in mind that we’re not talking about pay cuts that will cast these men and women (but let’s face it, mostly men) out onto the street. More than 90 percent of affected workers will have their salaries capped at comfortable $500,000 — hardly what one could consider a hardship. On top of that, employees will also be able to enjoy an additional $25,000 in perks, such as company cars and jets, without approval from the Treasury. Beyond that, they’ll need Feinberg’s approval. (We can see the outstretched hands already. But I need that $10,000 escort service!!)

Detroit Escorts: Nolan Finley

… I fell into the trap of making my assumptions based on what I’d been reading about Detroit,” he says. “I expected nothing but empty storefronts and abandonment. But the area as a whole didn’t look despairing at all. The hardship was surprisingly well masked.”
Schiavone can be forgiven for negatively prejudging Detroit. The barrage of dispatches that have appeared in the national media overwhelmingly portray Detroit as a post-apocalyptic setting whose people are desperate to get out. Here’s a sampling of what they’re saying about us:
• “On the adjacent business streets, commercial activity is so palpably absent you’d think a neutron bomb had been detonated.” — Time
• “A city and industry that together played a central role in the rise of the black middle class … is being destroyed.” — New York Times
• “For most ordinary folks with families, children and regular jobs, living with rats, fires, garbage, druggists, prostitutes and weirdos is simply too big a price to pay.” — Forbes

Detroit Strip Clubs: Hustler Club opening, church event may share street

October 23, 2009 at 12:01 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

… We’ll have our own light show with a concert outdoors. … We want our good work to outshine the bad work,” said Rev. Frank Julian.
The $4.2 million strip club received a liquor license transfer two weeks ago after they sued claiming the city was delaying. A federal judge ordered four council members to adhere to state regulations or face fines.
The Hustler Club is on John A. Papalas Drive and West Outer Drive. The church is across the street on West Outer Drive in Melvindale.
The Halloween-eve event will feature hay rides and skateboarders and will be part of the church’s Turkey Aid program. Visitors are asked to bring a turkey to help feed the needy on Thanksgiving.
A group of ministers will make the trek across the street to pray for those at the Hustler Club. The group has been fighting to keep the strip club out of the area.
