Detroit Escorts: Leonard Pitts: Precious is one of the invisible

November 28, 2009 at 7:49 pm | In Detroit escorts | No Comments

Precious is an ode to refusing to die. Precious is a girl struggling to live an unlivable life, 16 years old, illiterate, sexually abused by both parents, mother of two children (one with Down syndrome) sired by her father, physically and verbally beaten down by her monster of a mother and yet, somehow unable to give in to the idea that she is nothing and her name, nobody. She is that invisible girl, the one we decline to see because she doesn’t look like Halle, enunciate like Condi, inspire like Oprah, doesn’t ratify our faith in the inevitability of happy endings. There are more of them than we would care to know. They are not just girls, not just poor, not just black.
They are incest victims in silent suffering, gay boys abandoned by their families, girls sold into prostitution by their mothers, 12-year-olds at home caring for 6-year-olds because nobody’s seen the 35-year-old in days. They are high school graduates who cannot read their own diplomas. They are children “our” children failed by families and then failed again by overburdened social agencies whose job is to take up the slack, catch them before they fall.

Detroit Strip Clubs: LINCOLN PARK: State approval expected for Hustler club; could open this week

LINCOLN PARK — A controversial strip club that has been debated off and on for years could finally open this week.
The state Liquor Control Commission is expected to approve a liquor license transfer Monday for the Larry Flynt Hustler Club, at John A. Papalas and Outer Drive.
The commission held a hearing on the matter Tuesday in which members of the Lincoln Park Ministerial Association submitted about 1,000 letters of protest, asking that the $7 million club not be allowed to open.
A commission spokeswoman declined to comment on the situation, saying only that the commission speaks through its written orders. Because of the Thanksgiving Day holiday, the commission is expected to formalize its decision Monday, she said.

“I would rather see a manufacturing facility than another strip club,” Basham said. “I don’t think the Hustler nightclub benefits Lincoln Park or Downriver. For the revenues brought to the city, I think that will be offset by more crime and police resources.”
