The president’s trip to Pennsylvania was part of what the White House is billing as a “listening tour” on the topic of jobs. It comes on the heels of a summit the president held Thursday at the White House with leaders from various sectors of the economy.
“We had frank discussions about a variety of ideas that helped refine our thinking,” Obama told the crowd Friday.
His remarks followed a visit to Allentown Metal Works, a local factory that has struggled for years, particularly in what Obama called the “brutal recession.”
In an exchange that drew laughter from the crowd, Obama took a question from a second-year student who said he has been studying criminology.
“I was wondering if, maybe, if you checked out some of the statistics about legalizing prostitution, gambling, drugs and nonviolent crime in order to stimulate some of the economy,” the student said.

WASHINGTON (CBS) ―
A college student attending President Obama’s town hall-type meeting in Allentown, Pa., Friday offered his own suggestions for helping to stimulate the economy.
During the question and answer part of the event, the unidentified student asked Obama, “Have you thought about legalizing prostitution, gambling, drugs and non-violent crimes in order to stimulate some of the economy?” The president, quiet but apparently amused by the question, eventually answered, “That will not be my job strategy.”
“I appreciate the boldness of your questions,” Obama said as the room erupted in laughter. “But let me say this… first of all, part of what you’re supposed to do in college is question conventional wisdom. So you’re doing exactly what you’re supposed to be doing thinking in new ways about things.”
The president then went on to talk about different segments of the economy without returning to the student’s proposal.

Detroit Adult Entertainment: Obama Encouraged By New Jobs Numbers

… President Obama calls the latest unemployment figures “modestly encouraging.”  In a town hall-style meeting in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Obama said it’s good news just in time for the “season of hope.”
Obama said there’s a lot of tough work ahead but cited positive trends.  The Allentown area has been especially hard-hit in the long recession.
Obama said rising joblessness has been a “gut punch” for too many families.  The President noted that many companies are hesitant to resume hiring.  He vowed to do everything possible to promote jobs creation.
Obama responded to criticism that he is trying to do too much and should be focused fully on jobs.
He said healthcare and energy reforms can create new jobs and are part of an overall economic recovery strategy.
A young man posed the first question at the town hall-style meeting and asked whether legalizing prostitution and certain illicit drugs might help boost the economy.
