Detroit Strip Clubs: Getaway driver charged in home invasion

After the arrest of the male in the bushes, police arrested the driver in the vehicle by herself on Gardenia east of Campbell, Young said. Two other males were arrested on foot on Gardenia near Stephenson Highway, Young said.
The Crime Suppression Task Force is funded by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department and uses officers in local agencies to conduct undercover work, according to Young.
‘SIGNIFICANT AID’
“Without a doubt, (the task force) was a significant aid in our investigation with the capture of four other suspects,” Young said. “It was excellent police work by patrol officers and detectives in the Crime Suppression Task Force.”
Police believe the 27-year-old homeowner was randomly targeted, Young said. The homeowner works at the front door of Cheetah’s On The Strip, described by police as a gentleman’s club, at 19245 W. Eight Mile in Detroit. Police believe the suspects followed her home after the bar closed, Young said.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Jackson said he’d laugh ‘all the way to the bank’ in Synagro deal

January 31, 2010 at 4:13 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

Prosecutors showed a video shot inside the car of former Synagro Vice President James R. Rosendall in early 2008, who by then was cooperating with the FBI. The video shows Rayford Jackson detailing payments he had made to Conyers and others to assure the contract would pass.
Jackson says on the tape he paid all members of the City Council, though it is not clear whether he is referring to bribes or campaign donations, which are legal. Also, FBI Special Agent Michael Lubisco, who headed the investigation, testified Jackson sometimes lied to Rosendall.
In the video, Jackson tells Rosendall that Bernard N. Kilpatrick, the father of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, had been making $45,000 a month as a consultant since his son became mayor.
The trial in front of a jury and Cohn has already heard testimony from officials of a technology company and a strip club who say Riddle shook them down.

Detroit Massage Parlors: More airport security won’t do much to stop terrorists. Leaving the Middle …

Consider the evidence from existing policies toward drugs, prostitution, and immigration. In each case, policy tries to ban or limit the activity, hoping to raise the costs of supplying it. Meanwhile, minimal effort is exerted to reduce the demand for intoxication, sex, and a higher income.
The net result is that drugs and prostitution are widely available and the US is home to at least 9 million illegal immigrants. Sure, existing laws may reduce these activities somewhat, but the net impact appears to be minor.
Why?
Desire often trumps law. And it’s just too easy to get around the law. Illegal drugs and immigrants can enter the country along lengthy borders and via sea, air, or land routes. Purveyors of prostitution services have endless means for avoiding even the most robust enforcement effort, from massage parlors to escort services to Internet sex.

Detroit Strip Clubs: FBI sting yields tapes on alleged bribes

Riddle made the same claim when questioned by the FBI after Jackson handed him cash at Detroit Metropolitan Airport on Oct. 17, 2007, allegedly to be passed on to Conyers in connection with the Synagro deal, Gardey said in the court filing.
Rosenberg pleaded guilty in 2006 to conspiracy to launder money in connection with illegal marijuana sales. In November, Cohn sentenced him to 30 months in prison after prosecutors asked for leniency because Rosenberg testified against two co-defendants. Cohn recently delayed Rosenberg’s prison reporting date because he was subpoenaed to testify in the Riddle case, court records show.
‘That was good stuff’
Thursday, during an off day in Riddle’s corruption trial, Riddle joked with the lead prosecutor, Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Cares, during a brief hallway encounter.
“You guys are bringing it,” Riddle told Cares, telling him the prosecution had a good day Wednesday when strip club officials accused Riddle of asking for $25,000 in exchange for Conyers’ vote on a strip club license transfer.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Riddle trial turns to Synagro

January 29, 2010 at 11:24 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

Riddle, 63, is charged in a seven-count indictment with charges that include conspiracy, extortion and making false statement to the FBI. Today is the fourth day of evidence in his trial.
The charges stem from Riddle’s time as a top aide to former Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers, who pleaded guilty to bribery in June and awaits sentencing on March 10.
Conyers cast the deciding vote when the Detroit City Council awarded a $1.2 billion contract for sewage sludge trucking and disposal to Synagro Technologies Inc. of Texas in 2007.
On the Synagro deal, Riddle is charged with assisting extortion by funneling a bribe to Conyers.
The trial in front of a jury and U.S. District Avern Cohn has already heard testimony from officials of a technology company and a strip club who say Riddle shook them down.

Detroit Strip Clubs: US case against Riddle rife with racism

He described Riddle and Conyers alleged acts of extortion, fraud, and monetary gain using her positions on the City Council and the Detroit General Retirement System board at length. He said the victims included two small Black Detroit-based businesses, Wireless Resources and the Phoenix Group, developer and restaurateur Dimitrios (Jim) Papas, Hustler Déjà Vu strip club executives, and Synagro Technologies.
This is the way business is done in the City of Detroit, he told the mainly non-resident jury. Throughout his opening statement and questioning of the first witness, Cares frequently alluded to Riddles conversations with representatives of the Kilpatrick administration. What he did not say, however, is Riddle was known to be an adamant Kilpatrick foe, calling him arrogant and selfish in an interview with The Final Call and advocating his removal by Governor Jennifer Granholm.

Hustler Déjà Vu executives, who are part of a national chain, are suing the City of Detroit, said Minock, because the Council did not grant their request to transfer a liquor license to their downtown strip club. He claimed they are using bribery allegations to facilitate their lawsuit. He could say little about Synagro due to Cohns restraining order.

Detroit — A federal judge today ordered the city of Detroit to turn over additional records to an attorney representing the family of slain exotic dancer Tamara “Strawberry” Greene.
Greene, who was linked to a rumored stripper party at the mayor’s Manoogian Mansion in the fall of 2002, was shot to death in Detroit on April 30, 2003. Her family is suing the city, former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, and top city and police officials, alleging they obstructed the investigation of her still unsolved murder for political reasons.
The defendants deny the allegations.
Today, U.S. Magistrate Judge R. Steven Whalen gave the city until Feb. 4 to turn over records including:

DETROIT (AP) After three days of trial, a Detroit political consultant charged with corruption seems impressed with the government’s case.
Outside court Thursday, Sam Riddle told a prosecutor, “You guys are bringing it.”
Riddle is charged with seeking bribes from people who had business at the Detroit City Council or the city pension board. He’s accused of conspiring with his boss, Monica Conyers, when she was on the council.
Strip club managers told jurors Wednesday that Riddle hit them up for $25,000 to get Conyers’ support for a license transfer. They declined.
There was no testimony Thursday in Riddle’s trial, which could last another three weeks.
Conyers pleaded guilty last summer and is awaiting a sentence.
