Strip club reps say Riddle wanted bribe

Riddle, 63, was a top aide to Conyers, who had a vote on the strip club license transfer. Deja Vu had hired Jackson as a consultant to help the company transfer the license of an existing strip club, the former Zoo Bar, on Congress in Detroit.

Earlier today, two officials from strip club company Deja Vu Consulting testified they were shocked when Riddle sought what they felt was a $25,000 bribe in connection with a license transfer and became concerned that Riddle might be working for law enforcement.

Records introduced at the trial show that on Nov. 17, the same day Riddle got the checks, Conyers sent a memo to the Detroit city clerk asking for a reconsideration vote on the strip club license transfer.

The strip club principals are suing the city of Detroit in federal court over denial of the strip club license, with the alleged shakedown included in their allegations.

Strip club owners to testify against Riddle

Although the strip club officials, Jim St. John and Joe Hall, refused Riddle’s demand, consultant Jackson, who stood to benefit from the deal, went ahead and gave Riddle two checks on Nov. 17, 2006, prosecutors allege. One check was for $10,000, earmarked for reconsideration of the vote, and the other was for $15,000, as a success fee, the prosecutors allege.
On Nov. 17, 2006, Conyers sent a memo to the Detroit city clerk that said she wanted to reconsider her vote on the strip club license. Riddle cashed the $10,000 check to his consulting firm, Meridian Management Systems, the same day, the indictment alleges.

The strip club principals are now suing the city of Detroit in federal court over denial of the strip club license, with the alleged shakedown included in their allegations.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Riddle trial witness says Conyers pushed for pension fund loan

January 27, 2010 at 5:00 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

… Conyers believed Kilpatrick “controlled” three votes on the 10-member pension board — those of Beasley, former mayoral aide DeDan Milton, himself recently indicted in connection with alleged kickbacks on city real estate deals; and the Rev. Wendell Anthony, who is president of the Detroit branch of the NAACP and was appointed by the mayor as a citizen representative.
The trial resumes today with testimony from Detroit businessman Christopher Jackson and others connected with a request that was before the Detroit City Council to transfer a DéjÀ Vu strip joint license.
Riddle is accused of using Conyers’ power to try to shake down the strip club owners for $25,000. It’s another deal where those paying Riddle didn’t get the City Council action they wanted. The strip club owners are suing the city in federal court over the denial of the license transfer.

Jean said officers seized an undisclosed amount of cash and found a menu which itemized such services as 45 minutes for $90, 70 minutes for $130 and 90 minutes for $200. It also offered a special âœcouples sectionâ that advertised services for couples for between $200 and $500 for a âœ90-minute pleasure package for two.â
âœThen in fine print it said â˜a light snack of cheese, salad and a fruit platter will be served with a nice glass of wine,ââ said jean.
He said officers also uncovered information that suggests there may be similar establishments in other neighbourhoods. He invited anyone who may notice suspicious activity on their block to call police or Crime Stoppers.
A neighbour, who did not wish to be identified, said she wondered whether it was drugs or prostitution when the police arrived and was not surprised at the arrests.

Detroit Adult Entertainment: Barney Frank and the Alien Defense

January 27, 2010 at 2:49 am | In Detroit adult entertainment | No Comments

He will be presenting his idea to the Royal Society, the UK’s National Academy of Science, to urge scientists to take their heads out of the clouds and stick them in the ground. Alien evidence is more likely to appear in deserts, volcano hangouts, salt-saturated lakes, or Antarctica, than in the stars, he says. In other words, “places where ordinary life struggles to survive.”
He has it all wrong. If evidence of extra-terrestrials can only be found where ordinary life can’t survive, forget Antarctica, go to Washington. In fact, I’d start with the House of Representatives, specifically 2252 Rayburn, the office of Rep. Barney Frank.
Here’s what you need to know about Frank. If there is an alien life form on this planet, he’s it. Or knows it or talks with it or possibly dated it. Frank isn’t all bad. He enjoys long walks on the beach, dancing in the rain, running male prostitution out of his apartment, and he absolutely adores two fun-loving mortgage providing youngsters called Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Like Papa Bear to two Baby “Housing Market Collapsing” Bears.

After the arrest of the male in the bushes, police arrested the driver in the vehicle by herself on Gardenia east of Campbell, Young said. Two other males were arrested on foot on Gardenia near Stephenson Highway, Young said.
The Crime Suppression Task Force is funded by the Oakland County Sheriffs Department and uses officers in local agencies to conduct undercover work, according to Young.
Without a doubt, (the task force) was a significant aid in our investigation with the capture of four other suspects, Young said. It was excellent police work by patrol officers and detectives in the Crime Suppression Task Force.
Police believe the 27-year-old homeowner was randomly targeted, Young said. The homeowner works at the front door of Cheetahs On The Strip, described by police as a gentlemans club, at 19245 W. Eight Mile Road in Detroit. Police believe the suspects followed her home after the bar closed, Young said.

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox has completed a deposition by an attorney representing the children of slain Detroit stripper Tamara Greene.

DETROIT (AP) – Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox has completed a deposition by an attorney representing the children of slain Detroit stripper Tamara Greene. Monday was the second and final day of questioning by lawyer Norman Yatooma. Testimony began Dec. 11. In all, Cox was questioned for seven hours in the federal courthouse in Detroit. Yatooma alleges in a civil suit that ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and other city officials stifled a police probe into Greene’s April 2003 shooting death. Greene is rumored to have performed at a never-proven wild party at the mayor’s official Manoogian Mansion residence in 2002. Cox and Michigan State Police investigated the rumored party, but later ruled there was no evidence that it took place.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Riddle teams with Conyers in ‘pirate’ life

January 26, 2010 at 8:36 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

Detroit — Longtime consultant Sam Riddle described himself and former Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers as “political pirates,” prosecutors charged in the first day of testimony at Riddle’s corruption trial.
They had a corrupt, stormy, but mutually rewarding relationship and the plunder they took was from business people with proposals before the Detroit City Council or the city’s General Retirement System, where Conyers sat as a trustee, Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Cares said in his hourlong opening statement.
Those businessmen — Reggie Barnett of Wireless Resources, Greektown restaurateur Jim Papas, Detroit real estate developer Melvin Washington, former Synagro vice-president James Rosendall Jr., and DéjÀ Vu strip club principals Jim St. John and Joe Hall — are among the witnesses expected to testify at the monthlong trial of Riddle, a former Detroit political consultant.

… I’ve done my seven hours,” Cox said as he left the courthouse. “If the court wants anything more out of me, I’ll be here to provide it.”
Chief U.S. District Judge Gerald E. Rosen last week denied a request from Yatooma to extend the deposition. But he said Yatooma could make a new request if he still had specific questions he wanted to ask after the seven hours were used up.
Yatooma said he plans to make the request, though “we’re very happy with what we got today.”
Rosen has ordered Cox and Yatooma not to talk about the deposition.
Greene, who was linked to a rumored stripper party at the mayor’s Manoogian Mansion in fall of 2002, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Detroit on April 30, 2003.
