Detroit Adult Entertainment: Cyr: Toyota ordeal hardly unique
February 27, 2010 at 6:26 am | In Detroit adult entertainment | No CommentsQuality control expert Frederick Deming became a cultural icon in Japan, while fading into obscurity in the U.S. Management expert Peter Drucker likewise steadily grew in influence. To be sure, Drucker also remains a major influence in American business circles, but his work is generally ignored in our business schools.
Drucker’s public impact and prominence began with his 1946 book “Concept of the Corporation,” based on a study of General Motors from the inside. Though the author generally praised the enormous firm, Chairman Alfred P. Sloan Jr. was offended, apparently by criticism of aspects of labor-management relations.
The book was banned within the company.
Things got worse. In the 1960s, when Ralph Nader and his young team publicly pressed for auto safety reform, the Big Three dug in. Some auto executives crossed the line and hired investigators to discredit him, thugs to intimidate him and prostitutes to compromise him. Nader fought back, and ultimately succeeded.

Detroit Adult Entertainment: ACLU sues Detroit Police over raid
February 27, 2010 at 6:26 am | In Detroit adult entertainment | No CommentsTwo legislators, State Rep. Gabe Leland, D-Detroit, and State Sen. Tupac Hunter, D-Detroit, are working to change Michigan law to require police to file charges against those whose vehicles they seized. The proposed legislation also would require prosecutors to release seized vehicles at no charge if the defendants are found not guilty.
In addition, former Wayne County Sheriff’s lieutenant Walter Epps, a candidate for Wayne County Sheriff, said if elected he would stop deputies from seizing vehicles without also filing charges.
The News found cases where members of the Wayne County Morality United seized vehicles without charging the owners with crimes. In one instance, a Southgate man’s SUV was seized after a brief conversation with a deputy posing as a prostitute, even though the officer wrote in her report that the man hadn’t solicited her.

Society Confidential: Good fortune for councilman’s staffers

We’ve always heard that Detroit Councilman Andre Spivey was a nice guy, but we’re impressed that he schlepped bags of Chinese take-out back to his staff the other day as a treat for working so hard all week. Not only did he buy them lunch, he went and got it. Maybe the councilman needed the walk, to work off the stress caused by this week’s strippers vs. church ladies (and men) showdown at city council. After all, he had to weigh both sides — from a business standpoint, strip clubs bring money into the city, but Spivey is a minister, so he’s also considering the moral issues.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Yes to booze, no to pasties; Detroit citizens take a stand on trivial issues
February 25, 2010 at 4:13 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No CommentsThe ongoing drama that is the Detroit City Council recently completed its three-year run of “Much Ado About Nothing,” in which the Council voted Tuesday 6-3 to approve strip club restrictions that left neither supporters nor opponents satisfied.

Kudos to those citizens who are attempting to redeem their city. God knows Detroit is in need of deliverance. But the bottom line is that Detroit – a city larger in area than Boston, San Francisco and Buffalo combined – is not reeling due to the activities taking place in a couple dozen strip clubs. If that were the case, it seems counter-productive that the Council would pass the portion of the ban prohibiting clubs to open on Eight Mile Rd. Why not concentrate such establishments in a designated area, the better to oversee and patrol?

Watchdog group objects to Detroit City Council’s prayers
Christian references called violation of First Amendment

Detroit –One day after being accused of ignoring religious objections to strip clubs, the City Council is facing criticism for calling upon Jesus during prayers at meetings.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation, a Wisconsin-based watchdog group, sent a letter Tuesday to the council accusing it of violating First Amendment mandates separating church and state. A 1983 U.S. Supreme Court ruling allows prayers before government meetings as long as they are nondenominational.
Rebecca Markert, an attorney for the 14,600-member group, said a review of recent Detroit council invocations online indicates “these prayers are rarely, if ever, nondenominational.”
“The City Council is elected to represent the entire citizenry not just Christians,” said Markert. “People who are not Christians or are agnostic or atheist feel like outsiders and they feel they are not going to get the same deal as a Christian would.”

Detroit — Just a day after a being accused of not being religious enough in the contentious battle over the new strip clubs ordinance, the City Council is being criticized for calling upon Jesus during prayers at council meetings.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation, a Wisconsin-based watchdog group, is blasting the council for including the name of “Jesus” in council invocations and prayers.
Rebecca Markert, a staff attorney for the 14,600-member organization said the council is violating the First Amendment that dictates a separation between church and state. A 1983 U.S. Supreme Court ruling allows prayers before government meetings so as long as they don’t promote a specific religious deity and that the invocation is nondenominational.
Detroit Strip Clubs: Detroit bans lap dances in strip clubs; let the exodus begin
February 24, 2010 at 7:48 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No CommentsAs if the city of Detroit didn’t already have a massive parting of the Red sea, this new strip club law certainly won’t help.
The City Council approved a crackdown on the city’s 31 topless clubs today that bans VIP rooms and lap dancing, but still allows them to serve booze. The vote was 6-3, with Kwame Kenyatta, JoAnn Watson and Brenda Jones dissenting. The council voted unanimously to pass new zoning regulations limiting where new clubs could open.
…
I guess the strip club owners, as shady as they may be, didn’t have the pull or the cash flow to bribe politicians this time around. If former mayor and pimp extraordinaire Kwame Kilpatrick were still in office, this wouldn’t have been a problem. The man single-handedly kept three strip clubs open with his own “personal business” on a Friday night.
…
Considering the topic at hand is strippers, let’s keep future references to “fish” at a minimum, shall we?
