From The Times February 10, 2010 Motor city where everyone has to be driven Everything you see in Toyota City lives in the drudge service of the company
The last time I was in Detroit, my lunch date was stabbed in the neck and the man I was supposed to interview resigned in a stripper-corruption-gunfight scandal. The tyres of my rented Ford were slashed in the car park. Compared with Toyota City it was lovely.
Toyota cars may have the odd defect, but Toyota City is flawless. The perfect corporate gulag, it is what happens when you cross the charm of an Ikea car park with the artistic flair of a Corolla.
Everything you see lives in the drudge service of Toyota. The town changed its name from Koromo in the 1950s, but everyone seems uneasy explaining why. The people are haunted by slogans that imply thankless sacrifice. In Detroit guns are prevalent. In Toyota, everyone seems to own a propelling pencil. It is far more disturbing. A cultish feel gives the streets an atmosphere somewhere between Postman Pat and that homicidal Scottish village in The Wicker Man.

TOLEDO — Scantily clad dancers were the draw at a downtown men’s entertainment club over the weekend for an event that raised nearly $1,000 for victims of the earthquake in Haiti.
“Lap dances for Haiti” was the way Marilyn’s on Monroe billed Saturday’s affair.
Although the billing might be misleading — lap dancing is illegal in Ohio — the intention isn’t.
General Manager Kenny Soprano said Sunday that the club donated all the money from the day’s regular $10 cover charge to International Services of Hope, or ISOH/IMPACT, of Waterville, Ohio.

“We’d been racking our brains for about a month or so, thinking about what we could do,” he said. “You don’t hear much about strip clubs giving back to the community.”
Detroit Strip Clubs: Jury begins deliberations in Riddle corruption trial
February 9, 2010 at 5:48 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No CommentsBut Riddle attorney Edward Wishnow said prosecutors used sensational allegations about Conyers to tar Riddle, who was her part-time chief of staff and had separate and legitimate consulting deals.
“Consultants are like lobbyists — it’s a way to gain access,” Wishnow said in describing Riddle’s role.
Riddle, 63, is charged in a seven-count indictment with felonies that include conspiracy, extortion and lying to the FBI. He faces up to 20 years in prison.
In seven days of testimony, jurors heard from a Greektown businessman and owners of a technology company, a strip club and a real estate company who said they were pressured to pay Riddle for consulting in order to get something they needed from Conyers. Jurors were told Riddle was the conduit for bribes paid to Conyers in connection with her deciding vote on the $1.2 billion sewage sludge contract the Detroit City Council awarded to Synagro Technologies Inc. of Texas.
