DETROIT — The public will get a chance to voice their opinion Monday in the battle over strip club rules in Detroit.
City Council took a straw vote earlier this month to remove a ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol inside adult entertainment clubs, a requirement that dancers wear pasties and a requirement that dancers stay at least 6 feet from patrons.
Concerned council members said the ban would have a negative effect on jobs in the already financially-strapped community.
There are about 1,600 employees that currently work in the adult entertainment business in the city of Detroit. Thats not just dancers. … There are a lot of people employed there, said councilwoman Saunteel Jenkins.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Detroit City Council to Debate Strip Clubs

– As the Detroit City Council readies to resume debate this week over the possible regulation of strip clubs within the city, at least one council member advises the city proceed carefully.
Councilman Gary Brown tells WWJ that even though he likes the concept of establishing a “red light” district for relocating adult clubs away from neighborhoods, he doesn’t believe such a move would be legal.
I think it’s unconstitutional to come up with a red light zone in order to force strip clubs into one particular area. I think the more practical idea is zoning, and that will get them out of the neighborhoods which is really what the complaint from the community is, get them out of the neighborhood, get them off of 8 Mile,” said Brown.

An overflow crowd is expected tomorrow for a planned public hearing on the strip club issue.
