DETROIT (AP) – Hundreds of strip club opponents and a smaller number of employees and other supporters of the clubs have packed a Detroit City Council hearing on whether to tighten adult business regulations.
A crowd overflowed Monday from the 550-seat council auditorium. Most speakers called for stricter limits on the clubs, such as banning alcohol sales.
A proposal before the council would ban VIP rooms and physical contact between customers and dancers and require licensing of employees. A vote could come Tuesday.
Gospel music legend and minister Marvin Winans says the council should respond to the public’s demand for more restrictions.
All Stars club worker Kweli Buffalo says the clubs provide needed employment in a tight economy.

Detroit — Churchgoers and strippers alike have jammed into City Hall this afternoon to say their piece about proposed regulations for Detroit’s strip clubs.

But Kweli Buffalo, a dancer at All Stars, also drew applause when she said she recognized many in the anti-strip club crowd as patrons.
“Some of the people in here I have seen in the strip clubs,” said Buffalo, who added the regulations will cost workers jobs.

Dennis Mazurek, with the city’s law department, said that in 1982, the city had 95 adult cabarets. Today, the city has 31 active topless bars, a spokesperson with the Michigan Liquor Control Commission said Monday.

Cheeks Kilpatrick “is going to have a very difficult race,” Darnoi said. “It’s not as if she’s running against someone who you can’t imagine as a member of Congress. Lot of people would look at this as a step up.”
Kilpatrick is not without support however, including strong financial backers like Detroit businessman Matty Moroun and Compuware chief executive Peter Karmanos. Her office did not respond to a request for comment on Monday.
The other major impact will be on the governor’s race, where former Kilpatrick associations may prove poisonous to potential candidates. “I can’t say how much of an impact, but I certainly think Kwame is going to be factor in this election,” Demas said.
Attorney General and Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Cox’s name has long been associated with a rumored cover-up of a party at the mayor’s official residence in 2002, where the mayor’s wife allegedly assaulted one of the strippers hired to perform.

Detroit City Council holds hearing on strip clubs
Associated Press – February 22, 2010 4:04 AM ET
DETROIT (AP) – City Council members will discuss during a public hearing controversial proposals that would change how strip clubs operate in Detroit.
The Monday afternoon hearing at City Hall is expected to draw supporters and foes of the changes.
Council members are considering banning the sale of alcohol and requiring dancers to wear pasties over the nipples. A federal judge in 2007 struck down Detroit’s regulations on where strip clubs could open and ordered them rewritten.
Some council members also support banning lap dances and VIP rooms in the 30 or so clubs.
Religious and neighborhood groups say strip clubs reduce property values and increase crime.
Strip-club owners have promised a costly legal fight.
