Rebuttal: Regulate strip clubs to protect Detroit
The contention of the Feb. 18 editorial (”Clothes off: Ministers’ attempt to take the naked out of strip clubs will kill taxpaying businesses”) that Detroit’s regulations for sexually oriented businesses have “worked reasonably well to mitigate their negative effects on the community” demonstrates that editorial board members do not live near any such businesses.

Detroit has less than 10 percent of Michigan’s population, but nearly half of the state’s strip clubs. In part, Oakland County became one of the most affluent counties in the country after then-Prosecutor L. Brooks Patterson targeted strip clubs by impeding their operation. The clubs often would sue and win, but the cost of litigation eventually forced them to leave.

The serving of alcohol makes strip clubs a target for criminals — drunken patrons will not report crimes committed against them for fear of being discovered and are more likely to commit lewd sex acts outside of the clubs (which happens a lot in Detroit).

Detroit –The City Council could vote as early as today on a contentious strip club crackdown that drew more than 500 people to City Hall on Monday for a marathon public hearing.
The sometimes raucous crowd was dominated by religious leaders and residents who urged council members to reinstitute a proposed alcohol ban and rule that topless dancers wear opaque pasties.
“We don’t want our city patterned after Sodom and Gomorrah,” said Jerome Williams, a 61-year-old Detroiter who urged the council to get tough.

But strip club employees and owners said the rules would not reduce crime and only hurt business in an already struggling city.

“Some of the people in here I have seen in the strip clubs,” said Buffalo, who added the regulations will cost workers jobs.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Jones feels Google misrepresents Windsor: Wants more flowers

February 23, 2010 at 3:01 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

After successfully working to rid Windsorâs streetscape of a bloody murder scene, Coun. Ron Jones now wants internet giant Google to add flowers and cleaner parks.
âœThatâs not Windsor,â Jones said of what visitors see when they use Google Mapsâ Street View function to navigate local streets and scenery.
Within days of adding the 3-D photographic perspective to local streets for internet users around the globe wanting to browse what 130 Canadian cities and towns have to offer, Google Canada agreed to remove a scene of crime tape and bloodied bandages outside west-end strip club Leopardâs Lounge and Broil, where Nicholas Ingram, 24, was fatally stabbed July 21.
In addition to that murder scene, Googleâs camera cars roamed Windsorâs streets in the midst of last summerâs bitter CUPE labour dispute, capturing countless crystal-clear images of trash in parks, gardens filled with dead flowers and sports fields drowning under overgrown weeds and litter.

Detroit strip club hearing draws pastors, dancers
Associated Press – February 22, 2010 6:54 PM ET
DETROIT (AP) – Hundreds of strip club opponents and a smaller number of employees and other supporters of the clubs have packed a Detroit City Council hearing on whether to tighten adult business regulations.
A crowd overflowed Monday from the 550-seat council auditorium. Most speakers called for stricter limits on the clubs, such as banning alcohol sales.
A proposal before the council would ban VIP rooms and physical contact between customers and dancers and require licensing of employees. A vote could come Tuesday.
Gospel music legend and minister Marvin Winans says the council should respond to the public’s demand for more restrictions.
All Stars club worker Kweli Buffalo says the clubs provide needed employment in a tight economy.

Detroit — Churchgoers and strippers alike have jammed into City Hall this afternoon to say their piece about proposed regulations for Detroit’s strip clubs.

But Kweli Buffalo, a dancer at All Stars, also drew applause when she said she recognized many in the anti-strip club crowd as patrons.
“Some of the people in here I have seen in the strip clubs,” said Buffalo, who added the regulations will cost workers jobs.

Dennis Mazurek, with the city’s law department, said that in 1982, the city had 95 adult cabarets. Today, the city has 31 active topless bars, a spokesperson with the Michigan Liquor Control Commission said Monday.

Detroit Strip Clubs: FBI prepares charges against former Detroit Mayor Kilpatrick

February 22, 2010 at 8:12 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

Cheeks Kilpatrick “is going to have a very difficult race,” Darnoi said. “It’s not as if she’s running against someone who you can’t imagine as a member of Congress. Lot of people would look at this as a step up.”
Kilpatrick is not without support however, including strong financial backers like Detroit businessman Matty Moroun and Compuware chief executive Peter Karmanos. Her office did not respond to a request for comment on Monday.
The other major impact will be on the governor’s race, where former Kilpatrick associations may prove poisonous to potential candidates. “I can’t say how much of an impact, but I certainly think Kwame is going to be factor in this election,” Demas said.
Attorney General and Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Cox’s name has long been associated with a rumored cover-up of a party at the mayor’s official residence in 2002, where the mayor’s wife allegedly assaulted one of the strippers hired to perform.

Detroit City Council holds hearing on strip clubs
Associated Press – February 22, 2010 4:04 AM ET
DETROIT (AP) – City Council members will discuss during a public hearing controversial proposals that would change how strip clubs operate in Detroit.
The Monday afternoon hearing at City Hall is expected to draw supporters and foes of the changes.
Council members are considering banning the sale of alcohol and requiring dancers to wear pasties over the nipples. A federal judge in 2007 struck down Detroit’s regulations on where strip clubs could open and ordered them rewritten.
Some council members also support banning lap dances and VIP rooms in the 30 or so clubs.
Religious and neighborhood groups say strip clubs reduce property values and increase crime.
Strip-club owners have promised a costly legal fight.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Meeting On Strip Club Rules Monday

Meeting On Strip Club Rules Monday
Council Considering Reversing Ban
POSTED: Sunday, February 21, 2010
UPDATED: 10:30 pm EST February 21, 2010
DETROIT — The public will get a chance to voice their opinion Monday in the battle over strip club rules in Detroit.
City Council took a straw vote earlier this month to remove a ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol inside adult entertainment clubs, a requirement that dancers wear pasties and a requirement that dancers stay at least 6 feet from patrons.
Concerned council members said the ban would have a negative effect on jobs in the already financially-strapped community.
There are about 1,600 employees that currently work in the adult entertainment business in the city of Detroit. Thats not just dancers. … There are a lot of people employed there, said councilwoman Saunteel Jenkins.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Detroit City Council to Debate Strip Clubs

February 21, 2010 at 11:49 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

Posted: Sunday, 21 February 2010 5:36PMDetroit City Council to Debate Strip Clubs
– As the Detroit City Council readies to resume debate this week over the possible regulation of strip clubs within the city, at least one council member advises the city proceed carefully.
Councilman Gary Brown tells WWJ that even though he likes the concept of establishing a “red light” district for relocating adult clubs away from neighborhoods, he doesn’t believe such a move would be legal.
I think it’s unconstitutional to come up with a red light zone in order to force strip clubs into one particular area. I think the more practical idea is zoning, and that will get them out of the neighborhoods which is really what the complaint from the community is, get them out of the neighborhood, get them off of 8 Mile,” said Brown.

An overflow crowd is expected tomorrow for a planned public hearing on the strip club issue.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Jurors attack lone Black woman for holding out in Riddle case

February 19, 2010 at 5:25 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

Despite Cohns instructions, the jury foreman Matt LeFevre told reporters that the lone Black juror held out for acquittal. A woman who appears to be in her 30s, she is a flight attendant. Lefevre claimed she refused to deliberate at all, and said he wanted Riddle re-tried.
Another juror claimed she said sarcastically, Lets hang the Black man.
Instead, despite pressure from 11 jurors not of her race, which some jurors said included screaming fights, the flight attendant hung the jury.
She was not available for comment herself, but during the trial, she demonstrated cynicism about the governments case.
During testimony against Riddle by Joe Hall, a manager of the national Déjà Vu strip club chain, she requested to ask a question. Cohn at first refused, but on the following day he allowed jurors to send written questions to him. He then read three questions to Hall, one of which was, Have you ever danced in a strip club?
