Detroit City Council President Charles Pugh says an ongoing battle over the city’s strip clubs has gotten “emotional,” and led to misperceptions in the community.
Pugh went door-to-door in a neighborhood on the city’s east side to talk with residents about a local strip club.
He says a heated debate over the Council’s efforts to develop rules for new strip clubs has been clouded by emotion. Many Pastors and some residents have objected to the Council’s removal of certain draft rules, including a ban on alcohol sales in clubs.
But Pugh says it’s more important to manage what goes on outside clubs than inside. He adds Council has to act on these rules, before a current moratorium on new clubs expires next month.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Pugh crashes city car, delays reporting it

Photos provided by the city show that the car has two flat tires, but Pugh told police he drove the vehicle home after the accident and had it towed the next day. The car also has a cracked bumper, extensive damage to the driver’s and passenger’s sides and a missing rearview mirror and tire hubcap.
Pugh, 38, maintained this morning that he did nothing wrong and hadnt been drinking when he tried to avoid being hit by a fast-moving car with bright lights coming up behind him as he exited I-75 at Mack.
I reported it the next day to the police, he said as he and staff began canvassing around 7 Mile and Van Dyke today to talk to residents about the impact of strip clubs on their neighborhoods.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Pugh visits neighborhood to talk about strip clubs

Pugh visits neighborhood to talk about strip clubs

Pugh visited the neighborhood in the first of three such trips to areas near strip clubs. The council is pondering what to do about such businesses because a moratorium on the clubs expires March 31.

“We come here because I want to hear from residents who live near strip clubs,” Pugh said. “We are here to listen. This is an issue that has urgency.”
A group led by the Rev. Marvin Winans, pastor of Perfecting Church, wants the council to force dancers to wear pasties, and ban alcohol, lap dances and VIP rooms. The council is looking at banning VIP rooms, requiring all strip club employees to be licensed and for dancers to perform on stage.

Pugh said he is also looking at incentives strip club owners can be offered to move out of residential areas and into industrial ones, and a cap on how many clubs can operate in the city.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Charles Pugh on crash reported 3 days later: ‘If we violated a policy it was …

Sources tell Fox 2 Pugh it is against city policy to not immediately report a crash involving a city-owned vehicle, and others have suggested he may have violated state law regarding damage to road signs. Detroit police are investigating the crash.
But Pugh, who typically has a driver, said he did not think he was doing anything wrong by driving home.
“So… if we violated a policy it was unbeknownst to me,” he told Fox 2. “I don’t drink and drive. I had not been drinking, and I went home because… I was not going to sit on Mack and 75 at… a quarter to ten at night and wait on the police.”
It’s been a tough week for Pugh, who also has faced repeated criticism from Rev. Marvin Winans over a reworked strip club proposal.

Detroit Escorts: Police say women acted as agents for teenage prostitutes

MADISON HEIGHTS — Two Macomb County women face felony prostitution charges after police said they acted as agents for two teenage prostitutes caught in an undercover sting at a Red Roof Inn motel.

The two older women — Jenny Lynn Demello, 31, of Warren, and Kelly Marie Smith, 45, of Center Line — were arraigned Tuesday in Madison Heights 43rd District Court. Demello is charged with accepting the earnings of a prostitute, a 20-year felony, and a misdemeanor count of marijuana possession. Smith is charged with transporting a prostitute, a 20-year felony, and misdemeanor marijuana possession.

Police said they identified Smith as part of the prostitution ring after they spotted her sitting in a car outside the motel. Smith had transported the Roseville teen to the motel where she and the other teen were working as prostitutes, police said.

Society Confidential: Saving the boat races; Motown Museum energized; strippers to congregate

This Monday, there’ll be a veritable million strippers march — well dozens, anyway — more ecdysiasts than have been seen in downtown Detroit since the old days of the Stone Burlesk on Woodward, at a 3 p.m. public hearing on strip clubs in the 13th floor auditorium of the Coleman A. Young municipal building (set your watch, boys).
You won’t see Bouncing, Beautiful Babbette , Machine Gun Kelly or the Golden Girl from the Golden West from the old Stone — we presume they’re in the strippers‘ retirement home — but there will be a large posse of dancers in attendance. Some of the proposals being argued: that strippers must stay on the stage (no lap dances) and that no more clubs be allowed on Eight Mile.

Detroit Escorts: ACLU sues Detroit Police over raid where 44 cars seized

Two legislators, State Rep. Gabe Leland, D-Detroit, and State Sen. Tupac Hunter, D-Detroit, are working to change Michigan law to require police to file charges against those whose vehicles they seized. The proposed legislation also would require prosecutors to release seized vehicles at no charge if the defendants are found not guilty.
In addition, former Wayne County Sheriff’s lieutenant Walter Epps, a candidate for Wayne County Sheriff, said if elected he would stop deputies from seizing vehicles without also filing charges.
The News found cases where members of the Wayne County Morality United seized vehicles without charging the owners with crimes. In one instance, a Southgate man’s SUV was seized after a brief conversation with a deputy posing as a prostitute, even though the officer wrote in her report that the man hadn’t solicited her.

Detroit Escorts: More scrutiny of air travelers

The CPSC has recalled more than 6 million cribs since September 2007, many due to failures related to drop sides, hardware and wooden slats. Consumer advocates and health professionals have long complained that federal safety requirements governing cribs do not address the durability of drop-sides on cribs and related hardware, as well as wood strength and quality and other issues.
RALEIGH, N.C. — A North Carolina man who insisted he was innocent of murder through more than 16 years in prison was declared a free man Wednesday after a groundbreaking exoneration pressed by the nation’s only statewide innocence panel.
Greg Taylor’s shackles were removed and he was swept into the arms of his relatives, including a daughter and the son-in-law he met for the first time. Mr. Taylor said he was looking forward to a good meal and thrilled that he was no longer considered guilty of murdering a prostitute in 1991.

Editorial: Ministers’ attempt to take the naked out of strip clubs will kill taxpaying businesses

The council this week resisted, moving instead a watered down ordinance that leaves what goes on in strip clubs largely unchanged.

Strip clubs have been in Detroit for decades, and the city — like many others — learned to cope with them a long time ago. Keeping them concentrated in a few districts of the city and away from churches, schools and business areas has worked reasonably well to mitigate their negative effects on the community.
Driving the clubs out of business with harsh regulations is an unfair way to treat a legal business — even one as seedy as strip clubs.

It might be more productive for the ministers to work on curbing the demand for strip clubs, rather than the supply.

Strip club debate gets heated
Pastor slams proposed lighter restrictions; council leader likens ban to segregation laws
Christine MacDonald / The Detroit News
Detroit –City Council President Charles Pugh sparred with a prominent pastor, likened outlawing strip clubs to the civil-rights struggle and floated the idea of a red-light district Tuesday as debate about the city’s topless clubs heat up.
Pugh called out the Rev. Marvin L. Winans for living in the suburbs during the council’s debate about a proposal that would allow the city’s 33 clubs to continue to serve alcohol but require their workers to get special licenses from the city.
The remark came after Winans accused unnamed newly elected council members of betraying residents by backing away from ordinances proposed last year that would ban booze and require dancers to wear opaque pasties.
Winans criticized strip club owners for living outside the city, but Pugh reminded the gospel singer and movie star that he does, too.
