Detroit Adult Entertainment: Slatkin withdraws from Verdi’s ‘Traviata’ at the Met

But it was apparent to many observers that Slatkin, a famously fast learner, had not wrapped his arms around one of the most often-performed of all operas.
New York Times critic Anthony Tommasini said of Slatkin’s musical leadership: “For a conductor to use the opportunity of a Met production to learn ‘La Traviata’ doesn’t seem the best idea. … I have seldom heard such faulty coordination between a conductor and a cast at the Met.”
New York Post critic James Jorden referred to the “tentative, clumsy conducting of Leonard Slatkin.” Besides making things difficult for Gheorghiu in the title role as the courtesan Violetta, Jorden wrote, Slatkin “also derailed both experienced baritone Thomas Hampson (Germont) and debuting tenor James Valenti as Violetta’s lover Alfredo.”
Detroit Adult Entertainment: For Butler’s Stevens, Run Began in the Driveway
April 3, 2010 at 12:13 am | In Detroit adult entertainment | No CommentsThere are parts of Stevens’s rise to stardom that are hokey. He loved grilled cheese sandwiches so much that he used to bring his own bread and cheese to Monk’s house so that Monk’s mother could make them. That way, he would not lose precious minutes on the court while eating them at home. There are parts that are bizarre, too. Stevens got a job as the director of basketball operations at Butler because one of the assistant coaches resigned after being arrested for soliciting a prostitute.
…
The job opening came when a Butler assistant coach, Jamal Meeks, was arrested for soliciting a prostitute and drug possession while on a recruiting trip. Meeks resigned, although two charges against him were dropped and he was later acquitted of a third. But that twist of fate started Stevens on his road to the Final Four.

Holm began the Ice House project online last year to raise money, but he didn’t disclose the location for months, despite plenty of media attention.
“The only way to keep it a secret was to do it somewhere no one would ever go,” he said.
“First day in the neighborhood, we’re hearing gunshots. We’re looking over our shoulders. We’re a little afraid. But after a month, we made friends. We knew these guys’ names and had a sense of them.
“They could have been drug dealers or prostitutes or homeless people. But we had the same amount of respect for them as the working class people we met…They have aspirations and dreams and families, and a lot of them are brilliant.”

James JordenOPERA REVIEW LA TRAVIATA Metropolitan Opera, Lincoln Center; 212-362-6000. Next performance Saturday; other shows through April 24.
Angela Gheorghiu’s triumph in “La Traviata” Monday night at the Met was a searing reminder of why we go to opera in the first place.
In one of the finest Met performances in years, Gheorghiu starred as Violetta, a courtesan who sacrifices her happiness for the sake of her lover’s family. Her smoky soprano and intense acting mined tragedy from Verdi’s tear-jerker.
Vocal highlights included a creamy legato in the first-act aria “Ah fors’ e lui” and, in the death scene, a whisper of tone that blossomed into a radiant high B-flat. But it’s impossible to isolate her singing from a portrayal so compelling that — for once — the glitzy Franco Zeffirelli production failed to distract.
Detroit Adult Entertainment: In Revival of Verdi, a New Note of Drama
April 3, 2010 at 12:13 am | In Detroit adult entertainment | No CommentsThe challenge is to support the singers, allowing them expressive freedom to bend lyrical phrases while maintaining an undulant gait. A singer’s expressive turns cannot all be planned in advance. A Verdi conductor has to be able to react in the moment to interpretive freedom.
In Mr. Slatkin’s defense, Ms. Gheorghiu is not easy to follow. She knows the style intimately but is an impassioned artist prone to boldly expressive singing. On Monday most of her interpretive touches seemed within the bounds of taste. Still, now and then she was all over the place rhythmically, for example, at the wrenching moment during the ensemble scene with chorus when the courtesan, Violetta, having rejected her lover, Alfredo, is insulted by the hotheaded young man before all the guests at a Paris soirée.

Detroit Adult Entertainment: The phrase ’separation of church and state’ appears nowhere in the US Constitution
April 3, 2010 at 12:13 am | In Detroit adult entertainment | No CommentsThe issue goes both ways, as some students themselves are misguided on the facts. A public school teacher was scolded by her student for using religious holidays, among other examples, to demonstrate rules on capitalization, being “informed” that she was not allowed to “talk about holy things in public.”
Whether the finger-pointing student holds religious beliefs or not, it’s sad that he believes he cannot express them in public. That this lack of understanding can render a U.S. citizen the target of self-imposed gag orders goes beyond mere rhetoric. Consider the moral vacuum that would be created if everyone were to publically hide personal religious beliefs, and imagine the unsavory forces standing by ready to fill that void. Our country already faces daily assaults on its culture in the form of pornography, prostitution, abortion and beyond. How much farther would these forces go if those who live by the moral tenets on which most religions are based were one day nowhere to be seen or heard?
