Detroit Adult Entertainment: Latest “Twilight Saga” installment to eclipse “The Last Airbender”

July 3, 2010 at 9:25 pm | In Detroit adult entertainment | No Comments

Still, if word gets out that this film is the stinker it sounds like, rather than the franchise-starter it’s supposed to be, it could do very disappointing business. With a $145 million budget, that’s not good tidings for the director or the studio. On the other hand, fans of the animated series could pull the film towards a solid, but certainly hugely distant, second. In any case, it seems clear that the massive and assuredly leggy success of “Toy Story 3″ will be nipping at its heels. One thing is certain: the film originally titled “Avatar: The Last Airbender” will not be emulating its former namesake commercially over the long haul.
Among other limited releases this week, we have “Love Ranch,” which is the first film starring Helen Mirren to be directed by her husband, Taylor Hackford (”Ray,” “An Officer and a Gentleman”). Sadly, it’s getting very bad reviews. That is not good for a limited release, even if Joe Pesci is also in the cast. Amazing that a film about murder and legalized prostitution in Nevada is considered dull, but making movies is an uncertain business. Right?

Detroit Adult Entertainment: Detroit Teen Revitalizing City

July 3, 2010 at 9:25 pm | In Detroit adult entertainment | No Comments

We’ve definitely encountered people, even with this project and other times in buildOn saying ‘Oh, that’s impossible you can’t do that you should just leave it alone.  Why waste your time.’
WHAT DO YOU SAY TO PEOPLE LIKE THAT?
I tell them..you never know until you try..
TRYING IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD IS CHALLENGING.
IN ADDITION TO BEING ECONOMICALLY DEVASTATED THE VOLUNTEERS WHO ARE OUT HERE TRYING TO REBUILD THIS NEIGHBORHOOD ALSO HAVE TO DEAL WITH CRIME. THERE’S A GANG THAT OPERATES RIGHT HERE ON THIS BLOCK AND PROSTITUTION AS WELL, WHICH TAKES PLACE RIGHT HERE, ON WHAT USED TO BE A PLAYGROUND..
BUILDON’S FOUNDER SAYS THE GARDEN IS JUST THE BEGINNING..
The rest of the neighborhood sees what’s going on and then the gangs move out, then the prostitution moves out.  It’s change.  It doesn’t happen overnight but it happens.

Detroit Adult Entertainment: The Reject Report Gets Glittery for Eclipse

July 3, 2010 at 9:25 pm | In Detroit adult entertainment | No Comments

Adam Sandler’s second weekend out with the guys is probably going to have a higher than average drop.  Most of Sandler’s films have second weekend drop-offs around the 50-60% rate.  No one else present in the film nor any good buzz that might be trampled under the weight of all the negative reviews are going to make that drop any smaller.  Grown Ups will likely break even in domestic take.
The same won’t be said for Knight and Day, which boasts a $117-million budget.  It’s not going to break $100 domestically.  However, Tom Cruise films generally do much better in foreign ticket sales than those found in US, so, worldwide, Knight and Day might find its way into the black.
LITTLE OPENERS
The biggest film to hit limited release this weekend is Love Ranch.  Directed by Taylor Hackford and starring Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci (Who knew he was back out of retirement?) it seems like a Casino-style look at a Nevada-based brothel.  It opens in 11 markets around the country.

Detroit Adult Entertainment: The Chicago Fed Offers Free Rent on Its Detroit Branch

July 3, 2010 at 9:25 pm | In Detroit adult entertainment | No Comments

If I’m not mistaken, the Fed is down to one check processing center (Cleveland) since the only people who write checks these days are people with no money in their accounts, identity thieves and folks like my grandma who refuse to use online bill pay.
So the Chicago Fed is trying to make use of its Detroit branch, pimping out cheap space to anyone who isn’t at all creeped out by the idea of working in a Fed branch. You know, I am considering a move, maybe I should give them a call and see if they’ll take a couple hundos and some physical gold in exchange for the joint?
The AP via the Chicago Tribune:
If you like the idea of free rent for up to one year in Detroit, Uncle Sam’s central bank wants you. The Detroit branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago has launched a marketing effort to find renters for some of its secure, 235,000 square-foot facility. It’s the first time the five-year-old building has sought tenants, as the Federal Reserve downsizes and consolidates nationwide. Detroit’s branch in particular finds itself with more space because it no longer houses a check-processing operation.

Detroit Adult Entertainment: Solidarity found within the US Social Forum

July 3, 2010 at 9:25 pm | In Detroit adult entertainment | No Comments

We talked about ways that we could help him – some of us being white, middle-class citizens of Michigan – and determined the most important thing was educating the people around us to keep such laws from coming to our state. Michigan is one of 16 states that has already introduced such legislation. We also discussed the importance of taking part in marches for issues such as immigration or labor rights in order to show solidarity for a common demand of equality and respect.
Solidarity goes beyond just standing up in headlines with other movements, though. In a workshop about the criminalization of LGBT people throughout U.S. history, I learned how the term “sexual deviance” has been used as
a means for other goals – picking up immigrants off the streets, belittling black people and generally just incarcerating people who look “different.”
Duanna Johnson was a black transgendered woman from a poor neighborhood in Memphis who was beaten by police offers after being picked up for sex work, though there is no proof of her doing such. This was only two years ago, proving that there is still so much work to do, particularly for the transgender community.

Stripper suit witnesses scarce
Attorney says Kwame Kilpatrick family and others are stalling as July 30 deadline looms
Paul Egan / The Detroit News
Detroit — Lawyers for the family of slain exotic dancer Tamara “Strawberry” Greene are scrambling to take about two dozen depositions in their federal lawsuit before a July 30 court-ordered deadline.
Norman Yatooma, who represents the family, said in a court filing lawyers for the city of Detroit and former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick — the two remaining defendants — have been uncooperative about scheduling.
“The defense appears intent on trying to run out the clock on discovery, while leaving plaintiffs’ counsel with the clear impression that they are just ’spinning their wheels’ when endeavoring, in good faith, to move this case forward,” Yatooma said in a court filing this week.

Greene, who was linked to a rumored stripper party at the mayor’s Manoogian Mansion in the fall of 2002, was shot to death in Detroit on April 30, 2003.
