SAN FRANCISCO — In 1894, George Bernard Shaw wrote “Mrs. Warren’s Profession” — now onstage at California Shakespeare Theater — to promote his theory that prostitution was caused not by “female depravity” but by “underpaying, undervaluing and overworking women,” which gave lower-class girls of his era few options.
Just so, the eponymous Mrs. W, when young, turned to prostitution as a way out of abject poverty.
Shaw sets up his scenario so that, following an impassioned speech justifying her life choice, Mum seems heroic to her illegitimate daughter — the educated, intellectual Vivie, who wasn’t actually raised by her mother and thus hardly knows her.
Detroit Adult Entertainment: Timothy Near on ‘Mrs. Warren’s Profession’
July 14, 2010 at 11:49 pm | In Detroit adult entertainment | No CommentsQ: Why did he take on prostitution?
A: There were over 100,000 prostitutes in London at the time he wrote this play, and a brothel for every 50 men. Conditions for the working class were awful, so many women were driven to prostitution. Shaw is saying the greater crime here is poverty, and poverty drives us to immoral choices. But the wealthy profiteer on crime, so they don’t really want poverty to get better. It’s a vicious circle.
I parallel this to today, when because of the terrible economy and the imbalance between the very poor and the very rich, people are being driven to join the military. I’m not saying the military is bad, I’m saying it’s where the poor are having to go because they have no other choices.
Q: Is his focus on the hypocrisy of a society that condemns yet supports prostitution?
Detroit Adult Entertainment: Review: Timothy Near directs ‘Mrs. Warren’s Profession’ at Cal Shakes
July 14, 2010 at 11:49 pm | In Detroit adult entertainment | No CommentsA prostitute could earn 25 pounds a night in Victorian England, while a skilled worker might scratch and claw for an entire year for a meager 62 pounds. Those are the mathematics of class and gender in George Bernard Shaw’s too-seldom-staged 1894 gem, “Mrs. Warren’s Profession.”
…
Indeed, Shaw not only defended prostitution, he also saw it as essentially the same trade as marriage, only at a different rate of

In the opening tableau, the rough-and-tumble Mrs. Warren (the estimable Stacy Ross) gets strapped into a whalebone corset as rigid as her smile, while her high-minded daughter Vivie (an exuberant Anna Bullard) casts off her oppressive undergarments forever. Mrs. Warren built her considerable fortune as a prostitute, and she makes no apology about it. After all, her only other choice was toiling away at the lead factory that poisoned her sister.

The girl’s mother, who asked that her identity not be revealed, told Local 4 that her daughter was preyed upon by strip club managers and strip club owners.
She said the strip club workers would wait outside of her daughter’s school, Northwestern High School, and hand out business cards.
“They are to blame, who lets a 14 year old girl into a strip club?” said the girl’s sister.
Police raided Club Onyx on Detroit’s west side Monday night after learning the same girl who was caught illegally dancing at another strip club in April was dancing there.
…
The girl’s stepfather said he had no idea that she was sneaking out at night to dance until he caught her one night trying to leave the home in stripper clothes.

Detroit Adult Entertainment: Compassion Theatre Company Presents ‘Mrs Warren’s Profession’ 7/14-25
July 14, 2010 at 4:25 pm | In Detroit adult entertainment | No CommentsThe story centers on the relationship between Mrs Warren, a prostitute, described by Shaw as “on the whole, a genial and fairly presentable old blackguard of a woman,” and her “prudish” daughter, Vivie.[1] Mrs Warren is a middle-aged woman whose Cambridge-educated daughter, Vivie, is horrified to discover that her mother’s fortune was made managing high-class brothels. The two strong women make a brief reconciliation when Mrs Warren explains her impoverished youth, which originally led her into prostitution. Vivie forgives her mother until learning that the highly profitable business remains in operation.
Shaw said he wrote the play “to draw attention to the truth that prostitution is caused, not by female depravity and male licentiousness, but simply by underpaying, undervaluing, and overworking women so shamefully that the poorest of them are forced to resort to prostitution to keep body and soul together.”

Back in April, when police discovered a 14-year-old girl with mild retardation dancing in a strip club in Detroit, there was mixed feelings on who should be held accountable.
The girl’s mother told police and media that her daughter was difficult to control. The house mother of the club said the mother knew all along. Onlookers questioned the club’s policy on checking ID, while others defended the club saying they were easily fooled.
Now, that same girl — who just turned 15 — is being held by authorities after she was found in a different club. And now, there’s a new development: According to WXYZ, she admitted in a court hearing that she danced at two other clubs.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Girl, 15, caught stripping at 2nd topless club

DETROIT — An underage girl found dancing at a strip bar earlier this year was caught dancing at another topless club on the same day the first establishment was padlocked, police said Tuesday.
Officers went to Club Onyx in Detroit on Monday night after getting a tip that an underage girl was dancing, police spokesman John Roach said. The 15-year-old they found was the same girl
who at age 14 was performing at All Stars Lounge in April, he said.
Police arrested a manager at Club Onyx, Roach said. Roach said the club could be shuttered and the manager could be charged with child sexually abusive activity.
“It says a lot about the girl’s situation but also it says a lot about the way some of these clubs operate,” Roach said of the discovery.

The girl testified this month she worked at two other strip clubs before All Star hired her — without ever asking for ID — and a girl she went to Northwestern High School with also worked at the club. She claimed she worked at All Star several days a week, and police say she made about $350 a night.

Tuesday’s incident comes several months after the City Council adopted new restrictions on strip clubs, including bans on VIP rooms. Council members considered, but rejected, requests by Winans and other religious leaders to ban alcohol at the clubs.
