Detroit Adult Entertainment: Rebuilding Detroit

These developments are necessary to bring people, jobs and life back to downtown Detroit. But what about the city’s suburbs that are filled with crime and abandoned houses? Since Detroit is such a sprawling area, many of these neighborhoods seem to stretch on and on as desolate wastelands.
Construction managers and city leaders have taken on a renewed focus for rebuilding the suburbs through construction and restoration projects. For example, the city’s Brush Park neighborhood, which used to feature some of the most upscale homes in Detroit, has more recently been known for crumbling buildings, drug dealers and prostitutes. Today, however, neighborhood groups are restoring old homes and developers have begun building condominiums. One developer expected to build 375 new units in the neighborhood; however, demand has been so high that he’s now planning on 800 units.

Detroit Adult Entertainment: U.S. v. ACOSTA

July 20, 2010 at 1:01 pm | In Detroit adult entertainment | No Comments

U.S. v. ACOSTA
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, Plaintiff-Appellee, v. HANOI BARBARO ACOSTA, Defendant-Appellant.
No. 08-10463.
United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit.
Filed July 19, 2010.
Before: ALARCÓN, LEAVY, and GRABER, Circuit Judges.
NOT FOR PUBLICATION
Hanoi Barbaro Acosta appeals from the 262-month sentence imposed following his conviction by jury trial for transportation of a minor in interstate commerce for prostitution, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 2423(a) and (e). We have jurisdiction under 28 U.S.C. § 1291, and we affirm.
Acosta contends that the district court erred by applying several sentencing enhancements, and that the sentence was procedurally and substantively unreasonable.
This court reviews de novo the district court’s interpretation of the sentencing guidelines. United States v. Dixon, 201 F.3d 1223, 1233, (9th Cir. 2000). This court reviews for clear error the factual findings underlying the sentencing decision. United States v. Barnes, 125 F.3d 1287, 1290 (9th Cir. 1997).

Kilpatrick pleaded poverty at last week’s arraignment, and his longtime attorney James C. Thomas was assigned to the case at taxpayers’ expense.  But Thomas on Friday requested help on the case, which features hours of wiretap recordings.
Thomas asked for two additional lawyers for his team, noting in a court filing that prosecutors did not object to the request.  Pending a judge’s approval, Thomas could be joined by Joseph Niskar and Michael Naughton, who both have worked with Kilpatrick in the past and would now be paid by taxpayers.
And Kilpatrick’s legal troubles do not end there.  Already serving time for violating the terms of his probation and facing the new federal charges, Kilpatrick is scheduled to give a deposition in a lawsuit filed by the family of slain stripper Tamara “Strawberry” Greene.
