Detroit Escorts: Prostitution laws struck down
September 29, 2010 at 2:12 pm | In Detroit escorts | No CommentsWith Windsor’s close proximity to the U.S., which Ducharme said has strict prostitution laws, Windsor could return to its reputation as a border town Sin City if the ruling stands. “Would you have customers from the U.S.? No doubt you would,” he said. City clerk Valerie Critchley said the judgment wouldn’t likely affect the city’s licensing operations, which require licences of adult entertainment establishments, escorts and personal service, and holistic practitioners of massage therapy. “We’ve never licensed someone to commit acts of prostitution,” she said. “We don’t license prostitution, per se. That isn’t part of our bylaw.” Windsor police Supt. Vince Power said he couldn’t comment on the judgment until he had reviewed the entire ruling. But he said in a statement Tuesday that the Windsor police service “is very interested and concerned about these issues and the impact on our community.” fwillick@windsorstar.com BY THE NUMBERS Data from the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics show the number of homicides against prostitutes has remained steady over the last two decades. From 1991-99, police reported 72 prostitute slayings. From 2000-08, there were 70.© Copyright (c) The Windsor Star

Detroit Adult Entertainment: Busted: Prostitution sting in Pontiac nets several arrests
September 28, 2010 at 1:01 pm | In Detroit adult entertainment | No CommentsPolice have made several arrests and handed out tickets in a prostitution sting that targeted both customers and prostitutes in the Baldwin Avenue corridor.
…
The individuals soliciting the undercover officers for sex come from Pontiac as well as neighboring communities like White Lake Township and Clarkston, Troy said. They encounter not just steep fines and court costs, but also they risk contracting a sexually transmitted disease from a prostitute, Troy added.
These women live on the streets and turn to prostitution to feed their addictions to heroin and crack, he said.
…
One of the alleged prostitutes needed medical treatment for a gangrene infection on her hand.
Another alleged prostitute was also a junkie with a severe burn from falling asleep near a candle after shooting up heroin.
…
Capt. Wendy Keelty-Reyes said the prostitutes are often victims living with a history of being abused sexually.
“It’s really sad,” she said. “That’s not anyone’s dream to be that, a prostitute.”
Detroit Massage Parlors: Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore launch campaign to stop child sex trafficking
September 27, 2010 at 1:12 am | In Detroit massage parlors | No CommentsIn June, Amanda Kloer, who describes herself as a full-time abolitionist for six years, wrote at the site End Human Trafficking, about a Long Island massage parlor where the owner, Jin Hua Cui, was charged with running a human trafficking ring to lure young girls from Korea to the U.S. and force them into prostitution (http://humantrafficking.change.org/blog/view/korean_women_accept_jobs_at…).
“Hua Cui posted help wanted ads, for what she claimed were nail salons in New York, offering Korean girls the chance to earn a good living. But when they arrived, they soon learned that no nail salon existed, and they were expected to sell sex instead of manicures. At least seven women were sold out of the massage parlor for $60 to $80 an act, all of which was pocketed by Hua Cui. And, surprise, surprise, the front business Asian Bodyworks advertised their “very lovely girls” on Craigslist.

Federal Judge Says Lorenzo Jones Must Finish Deposition

UPDATED: 4:39 pm EDT September 26, 2010
DETROIT — A federal judge has ordered a bodyguard of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to continue his deposition in a civil case connected to the death of exotic dancer Tamara Greene.
Judge Gerald Rosen signed the order for Lorenzo Jones on Friday.
Greene was shot to death on a Detroit street in April of 2003. Her killing has not been solved.
Greene, who worked as a stripper under the name of Strawberry, was alleged to have danced at a party at the Manoogian Mansion in 2002.
Stories have circulated that the wife of the then-mayor Kilpatrick had confronted Greene and assaulted her.
Attorney General Mike Cox investigated the rumored party hosted by the mayor but said it had all “the earmarks of an urban legend.”

Detroit — A federal judge has ordered one of ex-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s bodyguards to continue being deposed and face questions about text messages.
The order from Chief U.S. District Judge Gerald E. Rosen was entered into the court’s computerized docket today and marks a minor victory for lawyers representing the family of Tamara “Strawberry” Greene, an exotic dancer who allegedly performed at a rumored Manoogian Mansion party.
Loronzo Jones, a former Kilpatrick bodyguard, was instructed by city lawyer John Schapka not to answer questions at his deposition July 23 about certain text messages sent by, or to, him, according to an earlier motion.
Schapka’s instruction to Jones was based on an interpretation of the court’s protective order governing text messages that haven’t been made public. But the court later made clear to Schapka that questions could be asked about text messages released by the prosecutor.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Pugh flip-flops on transparency, then flips again
September 24, 2010 at 4:12 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments… These organizations are getting abused nationwide. There’s a lot of political people who have set these up because it’s a way to circumvent the rules,” he said.
While a donation to a politician’s campaign fund is, by law, publicly disclosed, donations to these non-profits are not.
“Theoretically, could this be a way for a politician to hide a kickback,” asked Lewis.
“Absolutely, absolutely it’s a way to hide a kickback,” said Smith.
When you give money to a charity, there’s an incentive. You get a tax write-off. But when people donate to a politician’s non-profit, they don’t get a write-off.
“If you’re not getting a tax write-off, you better believe in your heart that you’re getting something else that we don’t know about,” said Smith.
“Some of the people that came to your breakfast were owners of topless bars in the city,” said Lewis.

Detroit — The city of Detroit filed an unsealed motion and brief today seeking to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the family of a stripper who allegedly danced at a rumored Manoogian Mansion party.
A nearly identical version was briefly posted on the court’s computerized docket last week and published in the Detroit Free Press.

Detroit Massage Parlors: Strings attached
September 23, 2010 at 4:25 am | In Detroit massage parlors | No CommentsHe doesn’t know of any trafficking prosecutions in the Springs, but the potential exists. Just at the beginning of this month, as reported by the Associated Press, six work recruiters were indicted in what the FBI has called the largest human-trafficking case ever charged in U.S. history. Accused of “luring 400 laborers from Thailand to the United States and forcing them to work,” the Los Angeles and Thailand-based recruiters placed workers on farms in at least 13 states, including Colorado.
“In the old days, they used to keep slaves in their places with whips and chains,” FBI Special Agent Tom Simon told the AP. “Today it’s done with economic threats and intimidation.”
‘End-destination crime’
The Task Force’s Edwards came to the cause after seeing a TV story on a local massage parlor raid. As a member of the local chapter of Zonta, a national organization that works on women’s issues worldwide, she recognized the potential for human trafficking and contacted the station to find out what happened to the victims. The response: “What victims?”
