Detroit Strip Clubs: DOJ Says Former Police Monitor, Not Her Ex-Firms, Should Return $10 Million

… Saul Ewing is gratified that the DOJ acknowledged there is no evidence that our firm had any connection with the alleged conduct or was even aware of it,” the firm said in a statement to The Am Law Daily through a spokeswoman. “We agree that this means the City’s motion should be denied as to Saul Ewing.”
The government’s motion against Wood comes on the heels of allegations that she had an affair with Kilpatrick while serving as police monitor, according to The Detroit News.
Earlier this month Norman Yatooma, a Birmingham, Mich.-based lawyer representing the family of slain stripper Tamara Greene, whose 2003 murder spawned an investigation of Kilpatrick, claimed in court documents that the former mayor “struck up a friendship with Wood and eventually engaged in an extra marital affair with her,” the Free Press reports.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Feds: Ex-monitor should pay back fees

November 30, 2010 at 10:24 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

The city of Detroit is suing for that amount to recoup fees after text messages revealed a relationship between the woman charged with enacting reforms in the department and Kilpatrick. In a filing Monday, the Justice Department and U.S. Attorney’s Office wrote that Robinson Wood should have to repay her fees, but her former employers didn’t know of the relationship and should not be sanctioned.
“Sanctioning Robinson Wood in the amount of the fees paid for her own work, although a steep price to pay, is appropriate in light of her role as an agent of the Court and the nature and extent of her deception,” according to a filing signed by Jeffrey R. Murray, a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice.
The court filing comes more than a week after a lawyer representing the family of slain stripper Tamara “Strawberry” Greene accused Robinson Wood of having an affair with Kilpatrick. In making the accusation, Birmingham lawyer Norman Yatooma cited a deposition the former mayor gave in the case.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Windsorsites dispute that city among unhappiest

November 29, 2010 at 7:13 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

Despite a chill in the Sunday air, the weather was one of Kirk Marshall’s reasons for being satisfied with life in Windsor.
He said the city’s waterfront is also a great source of happiness. But one of the big reasons for his love of Windsor comes from across the border.
A longtime Detroit Red Wings season ticket holder, Marshall said he loves going to Detroit to watch a wide array of sports. “I love the Tigers. I love the Wings. That’s a big thing in my life.”
Hairstylist Brittany Elekes, 25, said she is frustrated by the construction popping up around Windsor. She has to leave home half an hour early to get to work in LaSalle.
Elekes can understand why some people would be dissatisfied with Windsor.
“We’re known for bars and strip clubs,” she said. “That’s not classy.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Bob Monks’ brush with history

November 27, 2010 at 7:37 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

… I’m an artist,” he’ll say. “I can’t write a thing.”
But somehow, somewhere Bob Monks found the time and the right words to write Bob Monks History of Windsor, a whimsical look at the events and people who make up his adopted hometown.
In a word, it’s great.
The cartoonist from Bay City, Mich., has created his own mythology with a simple stroke of a pen.
In the book, Monks puts his personal stamp on Windsor, telling the story as he sees it with the economy and humour of one of his sketches. He writes like he draws.
With an equal measure of respect and good humour, he describes the late mayor Bert Weeks, strippers at the old Tracey Starr’s, the late Bessie Evzovitch’s vegetable stand at the market, and steel-willed city councillor Alan Halberstadt.

Boat records sought in slain stripper case
Lawyer questions whether city boats transported strippers to fabled party

Detroit — A lawyer representing the family of slain stripper Tamara “Strawberry” Greene wants the city to turn over records that could prove whether city boats were used to ship strippers and guests to a rumored Manoogian Mansion party.
Dozens of tipsters have claimed city boats were used to transport partiers and strippers to the Manoogian, which backs up to the Detroit River, Greene family lawyer Gary Hermanson wrote in a court filing late Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Detroit.

The affidavit and Schapka filing came hours after Hermanson questioned whether boats ferried partiers and strippers to the rumored Manoogian party. In particular, he wants activity logs and run sheets for Sept. 4, 2002.

They were not plotting to rob a convenience store, join a professional escort service, or launch a commercial website for flogging plagiarized English essays. Worse. Naturally, the school and all its denizens — friends, teachers, coaches alike — are profoundly shocked by this flagrant defiance of appointed roles in the high school cosmos.
