On this week’s Talking Michigan Politics podcast, Grand Valley State University’s Matt McLogan joins Press political editor Jeff Cranson to talk about Gov. Rick Snyder’s bold ambitions, Michele Bachmann’s visits to Grand Rapids and Troy and what to expect from Michigan’s Congressional delegation in the new session:
1. Gov.-elect Rick Snyder takes over on Saturday and promises immediate change. Outside of pushing a two-year spending plan, instead of the normal one-year budget, what can we expect out of the gate? Does his 6 percent corporate income tax fly with the Legislature? And what of the idea of capping at 80 percent the insurance premium share paid by a government agency or school district? Or another idea from Senate Republicans to ask voters to install a temporary, across-the-board wage cut for public employees in the constitution?

Detroit Adult Entertainment: DETROIT 187 Set Visit and Erin Cummings Video Interview
December 30, 2010 at 5:01 am | In Detroit adult entertainment | No CommentsThese were a few of the people that populated my first experience with Detroit and it showed a side full of passion and initiative for the city they lived in. Every city has its share of flaws – the slums and dark alleys many wouldn’t walk alone – but there is a vitality and heart that I hope others get to see. But enough about my trip, onto the interview, right?
Erin Cummings has had a busy year in television by most accounts. Her first big role this year came as a star in Starz’ Spartacus: Blood and Sand, a gritty depiction of the gladiatorial games with a focus on Spartacus, sex, and lots of blood. Later in the year she landed a role in Mad Men, in which she plays a call girl that will be remembered for her scene where she slaps Don Draper. Her latest role as the Wayne County Medical Examiner, Dr. Abbey Ward, in Detroit 187 is small, but her scenes are always welcome. Dr. Ward seems to have a quick one-liner in every appearance that gives her character a spunky and fun vibe.

Detroit Adult Entertainment: Feds will let lawyer review (248) call list in escort bust
December 30, 2010 at 5:01 am | In Detroit adult entertainment | No CommentsThe move comes a day after lawyer Paul DeCailly, who represents Miami Companions co-owner Greg Carr, filed a motion in U.S. District Court in Detroit accusing prosecutors of picking and choosing which Metro Detroit clients would be identified as allegedly hiring $500-per-hour prostitutes.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office had said DeCailly could review names from only the 313 and 734 area codes, not 248.
…
Prosecutors busted the international escort service in July, indicted the owners and three employees on prostitution or money-laundering charges and seized a black book with tens of thousands of customer names, job details and contact information.
Prosecutors have accused Carr and his ex-wife Laurie Carr of running an Internet-based sex empire that dispatched waves of prostitutes to hotels and beachfront villas around the world. The Miami-based ring listed Detroit as one of its busiest U.S. stops.
Detroit Massage Parlors: Covey Outlines Ferndale Successes, Challenges
December 30, 2010 at 3:48 am | In Detroit massage parlors | No CommentsAt the top of the list is Ferndale’s reputation as an “open, welcoming, safe, diverse and fun” city, a particularly goal for Covey as Michigan’s only openly gay mayor.
Estimated at 20 percent of the city’s voting population, Ferndale’s gay community has become an “integral part of the fabric of the city,” said Covey, a key supporter of the city’s 2006 human rights ordinance.
“They took a chance on Ferndale,” the mayor said. “They fixed up their homes, opened up and supported businesses, joined in volunteerism on boards and commissions.”
Covey also praised the seniors “who stuck by her” in the days before Ferndale’s decade long revival as well as the families now moving into the city of roughly 22,000.
When Covey first moved to the city in the 1980s, he said, the city was home to both an X-rated movie theater and massage parlor, two types of businesses now gone from the city.

Detroit Escorts: Lawyer to get 248 area code names in escort probe

Detroit Escorts: Feds unwilling to out Oakland County escort ring clients, but happy to …
December 29, 2010 at 7:12 pm | In Detroit escorts | No CommentsI’ve already written about how I think prostitution among consenting adults should be legal — so obviously I’m not really thrilled about most of the charges in the case anyway.
But the latest report goes to the heart of an even larger issue that’s been hot on folks’ minds around Detroit lately: How the instruments of “justice” determine whom to hang out to dry and whom to safeguard. Pig-greedy politicians or the big-money corporations that bribe them? Nickel-slick bagmen or the lawyered-up titans of industry for whom they run interference? Escort-service clients in the nation’s poorest big city or the high-powered, connected johns who reside only miles away in one of the nation’s richest counties?
…
Criminalizing prostitution among consenting adults is, to me, stupid, prudish and wrong. But prosecutors’ apparent willingness to subject one group of suspected clients to humiliation while covering for another group accused of doing the exact same thing? Because of where each group lives?

Detroit Strip Clubs: Motown Makeover
December 29, 2010 at 2:49 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No CommentsIn 1996, when Michigan State Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick first won a seat in Congress, her place in Lansing was filled by her 26-year-old son Kwame. A former offensive lineman and captain of the Florida A&M football team, he cut a striking figure. In 2002 he became the youngest mayor in the city’s history, and he confided to reporters that he first saw his potential after reading the story of King David. Seven long, bitter years later he was comparing himself to another Biblical figure: Job. “It is good that I have been afflicted,” he told a radio interviewer.
The wounds were self-inflicted. Kilpatrick surrounded himself with an intimidating, 21-member security detail and spent a lot of time inspecting the city’s nightlife. Shortly after he took office, a story began circulating of a wild drug-and-sex party at the mayoral mansion. Supposedly the mayor’s wife, Carlita, had walked in, caught her husband in the act of being entertained by a stripper named Tamara Greene, and beat the woman bloody.

Escort probe skips 248 area code
Feds will only reveal customers with 313, 734 phone numbers
Robert Snell / The Detroit News
Detroit — Federal prosecutors are refusing to reveal customers from Oakland County and the 248 area code who hired hookers from a high-priced escort service but are willing to out clients from Detroit, according to federal court records.
The legal tactic was unveiled in records filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Detroit involving the Miami Companions escort service.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office and FBI busted the international escort service in July, indicted the owners and three employees on prostitution or money-laundering charges and seized a black book bulging with tens of thousands of customer names, job details and contact information.
Paul DeCailly, the attorney for Miami Companions co-owner Greg Carr, flew to Detroit last week to review the black book. He wanted to see the names of clients from Michigan and Ohio, but the U.S. Attorney’s Office said he could see only the names from the 313 and 734 area codes, he said.
Detroit Escorts: With jobs scarce, agencies offer stopgap employment
December 28, 2010 at 4:12 pm | In Detroit escorts | No CommentsAgencies that get clients like Grady work-ready are finding that in this economy, training is not enough. With sparse job prospects, agencies are resorting to hiring the clients themselves rather than watch them slide back into their old habits. Other nonprofits are paying for their clients to go back to school.
“It makes a lot of sense,” said John Almstadt, who oversees the nine Michigan Works! offices in Oakland County. “It does help people address their barriers in a supportive environment.
“Of course, the long-term goal is to move those customers into unsubsidized employment,” but “on a short-term basis, this will definitely prepare them for that.”
For people putting their lives back together, work is more than a means to pay bills. Working helps keep them from their past way of life: homelessness, drug addiction, prostitution and crime, said Darin Weiss, chief operating officer of Grace Centers of Hope.

“I am professionally disappointed,” he joked. “But I suppose, from a civic-minded perspective, I’m glad.”
But don’t fear that senior Crowns like Manarin entrusted with such weighty prosecutions won’t be busy in the next year. In addition to the regular gamut of violent crimes that don’t result in death, there are 10 homicide cases dating back years still wending their way through the justice system.
Up early in the coming year is the first-degree murder trial of Richard Zoldi, charged in the August 2006 shooting of drug dealer Troy Hutchinson. Also coming is the second-degree murder trial of Kenyatta O’Neil Brown, charged in the 2009 stabbing of Nicholas Ingram in a strip club parking lot.
