… I was surprised — pleasantly surprised,” he said of not finding any murder indictments waiting for him.
“I am professionally disappointed,” he joked. “But I suppose, from a civic-minded perspective, I’m glad.”
But don’t fear that senior Crowns like Manarin entrusted with such weighty prosecutions won’t be busy in the next year. In addition to the regular gamut of violent crimes that don’t result in death, there are 10 homicide cases dating back years still wending their way through the justice system.
Up early in the coming year is the first-degree murder trial of Richard Zoldi, charged in the August 2006 shooting of drug dealer Troy Hutchinson. Also coming is the second-degree murder trial of Kenyatta O’Neil Brown, charged in the 2009 stabbing of Nicholas Ingram in a strip club parking lot.

Detroit Strip Clubs: A Rallying Cry: Vincent Chin’s Death and the Birth of A Movement

December 23, 2010 at 9:13 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

The 27-year-old man was Vincent Chin. Two men had just beat him with a baseball bat following a racially charged altercation at a Highland Park strip club called Fancy Pants. Chin died four days later.
On March 18, 1983, Wayne County Judge Charles Kaufman would find Chin’s murders guilty of manslaughter. They would both receive a $3,000 fine and three years probation. After the sentencing, Kaufman reportedly said: “These aren’t the kind of men you sent to jail, you fit the punishment to the criminal, not the crime.”
A movement begins in Ferndale
Chin’s beating death and the subsequent lenient sentencing of the assailants would become a rallying cry for the Asian Pacific American movement.

Before Chin and Ong crossed paths, Chin was celebrating. His buddies took him to Fancy Pants, a strip club in Highland Park, for his bachelor’s party.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Legal milestone in Ferndale marks Vincent Chin fatal beating case

December 22, 2010 at 7:36 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

Some of those who took part in the emerging Asian American civil rights movement nearly three decades ago joined with area officials Wednesday to unveil a plaque on a median at Woodward and Nine Mile Road commemorating the Chin case. The Michigan Bar Association plaque marks the legal reforms arising from the case as a legal milestone and is the 34th such designation statewide.
“The case continues to resonate in the Asian American community because of its significance,” said Roland Hwang, an attorney and official with the Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Committee. “The case touched so many people beyond the Asian American Community.”
Protests about the case led to legal changes allowing for victim impact statements at sentencings, mandatory minimum sentences, and the inclusion of Asian Americans as a recognized minority in U.S. civil rights laws.
Chin, 27, was engaged to marry and was with three friends at a bachelor party in the Fancy Pants topless bar in Highland Park when Ebens and Nitz started a fight with him that continued outside the bar.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Judge: Ex-cop monitor doesn’t have to repay city

December 22, 2010 at 6:01 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

Detroit — Former police monitor Sheryl Robinson Wood should not have to pay the city of Detroit $10 million she collected in fees after text messages revealed she had a personal relationship with former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, a federal judge ruled Tuesday.
In an eight-page order, U.S. District Judge Julian Cook said the city could pursue a breach of contract suit instead.
“The city’s motion bears all of the hallmarks of a breach of contract,” he wrote.
Dan Lijana, a city spokesman, declined to comment on the ruling Tuesday night.
The city was trying to recoup fees after text messages revealed a relationship between Kilpatrick and Robinson Wood, who oversaw court-mandated reform of the city Police Department.
Robinson Wood was named federal monitor in 2003 and resigned in July 2009 after the FBI discovered text messages that pointed to a personal relationship between her and Kilpatrick.
In November, a lawyer representing the family of slain stripper Tamara “Strawberry” Greene accused Robinson Wood of having an affair with Kilpatrick.

Detroit Escorts: Miami prostitution ring busted open in Metro Detroit hotels

December 21, 2010 at 10:12 pm | In Detroit escorts | No Comments

The clients helped Miami Companions rake in more than $4 million, which fueled a lavish lifestyle for the ring’s accused pimp and madam, according to court records.
The bust, however, wiped away the money, the million-dollar penthouse and a Costa Rican cathouse. Miami Companions owners Greg and Laurie Carr are divorced, broke and pitted against each other in federal court — she’s pleaded guilty and is cooperating with prosecutors.
“This is a weird way of life, do you understand?” said Laurie Carr’s attorney Oscar Rodriguez. “Things have a way of unraveling when you live in this mode.”
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said prosecutors will use the black book against Greg Carr, a 44-year-old Dearborn Heights native who they allege co-owned and ran the ring under an alias made for Motown: “Paul Cutlass.”
“Greg had nothing to do with the girls getting caught, doing something they shouldn’t have been doing in Detroit,” Carr’s attorney, Paul DeCailly, said. “He’s not a pimp.”

Detroit Strip Clubs: X Burlesque shocks and awes crowd at Caesars Windsor

December 20, 2010 at 8:00 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

Some stood up and cheered.
Others stood up and walked out.
Whatever the responses, X Burlesque, the risque Las Vegasborn revue at the Colosseum at Caesars Windsor Saturday night, made a lasting impression on the entire audience.
The review, which was topless save for the carefully placed pasties on each dancer, wasn’t your traditional burlesque show and would be closer to a performance at your local gentleman’s club if it wasn’t for the passionate choreography by the six skilled dancers.
Many in the audience gasped upon seeing an image of a topless woman on the jumbo screens before the dancers even walked on stage. This was a good indication of how the night was to unfold.
The show opened with a high-energy performance that saw the beautiful dancers thrusting their scantily clad rears and crotches toward the audience and carrying out extremely impressive acrobatics on the pole located front and centre of the stage. Almost immediately the sexy and suggestive performance induced what would be the beginning of a steady train of people walking out of the venue during the performance.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Some figures in Detroit investigation are victims, U.S. attorney says

December 20, 2010 at 6:24 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

Carlita Kilpatrick, wife of Kwame Kilpatrick and owner of Using Nonviolence to Influence Total Education, a nonprofit group. Prosecutors said Kwame Kilpatrick helped her group get $137,500 in state money between 2000-2002 money intended to help seniors and children. Feds say the company didn’t provide any services and most of the money was used for Carlita Kilpatrick’s $91,000 salary and personal expenses for her and her husband. It’s not known whether he’s cooperating with investigators. She declined to comment through her spokesman, Mike Paul.
Chris Jackson, employee of Déjà Vu Consulting, which is a consultant with strip clubs nationwide. Prosecutors said Riddle, at Monica Conyers’ behest, told Jackson to pay Riddle $25,000 for her support of a liquor-license transfer. Jackson refused, and Monica Conyers voted against it. Jackson later gave Riddle $25,000 in checks. Jackson testified against Riddle at trial. He could not be reached for comment.
