(NewsCore) – A wanted fugitive accused of smuggling women from Eastern Europe to work in strip clubs in Detroit was arrested Thursday at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on human trafficking charges.
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said Veniamin Gonikman, 55, was one of their top 10 fugitives.
Gonikman was charged in Detroit in 2005 in a 22-count indictment with trafficking in persons, forced labor, alien smuggling, money laundering, extortion collection and conspiracy, among other charges. He absconded from the United States before being formally charged.

The women were exploited and forced — through threats, coercion and isolation — to work as exotic dancers, primarily in strip clubs in Detroit.

The fire was set inside Gossip Massage Parlour at 417 Ouellette Avenue around 6:20 a.m. The flames spread quickly after an explosion, then consumed four businesses, caused severe smoke damage to several others and enveloped the downtown core in a smoky veil.
Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting out of the building, then spent the next nine hours battling the blaze.

Police caught a major break in the case when the owner of the Crazy Horse Saloon gave police video footage from his surveillance cameras. It depicts two men skulking around the massage parlour with a large cardboard box, then disappearing into an alcove only to flee moments before flames shot from the building.

The men cross Park Street, turn the corner, sit in front of the massage parlour and wait.

Detroit Adult Entertainment: Homeless warming center gets left out in the cold

In January, capacity at the Tumaini Center on several nights far exceeded the facility’s 120-person limit, the cap to maintain a safe ratio of supervisors to residents. Many are ex-convicts, mentally ill or heavily addicted to drugs. Without enough chairs, some residents have had to stand against the wall all night or sit in a drafty hallway.
“We can only do so much,” said Lardell Spratt, a case manager.
When Sara Gipson, 22, was told there were no open beds at the Coalition on Temporary Shelter (COTS), she came to Tumaini.
Having lived on the streets for years, she was jailed for prostitution five months ago and was released a week and a half ago with no place to go. For the last week, she has tried to learn how to sleep upright in a chair.

Detroit Adult Entertainment: Escort ring king to plead

January 26, 2011 at 8:37 pm | In Detroit adult entertainment | No Comments

While the details were unclear, a source familiar with the case indicated the deal is likely to include a guilty plea to unspecified charges, largely bringing to an end a criminal case involving one of the country’s largest prostitution rings.

Carr is the fourth defendant to reach a deal with prosecutors, who busted the international prostitution ring last summer. The U.S. Attorney’s Office labeled Miami Companions one of the country’s largest escort services, dispatching dozens of prostitutes to hotels and beachfront villas around the world.

Laurie Carr pleaded guilty Oct. 22 to conspiracy to coerce and entice prostitution and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Nayubet Swaso, a porn star who worked as a prostitute for Miami Companions, could spend 18 months in prison after pleading guilty Monday in federal court.

DETROIT, Jan. 26 (UPI) — The alleged mastermind behind one of the largest U.S. prostitution rings has reached a plea deal with federal prosecutors in Detroit, authorities said.
Greg Carr, the accused operator of the Miami Companions escort service, will plead guilty to as yet unspecified charges, ending the criminal case against him, The Detroit News reported Wednesday.
Carr, 44, of Dearborn Heights, Mich., is facing 11 counts of conspiracy to coerce and entice prostitution, coercion and enticement of prostitution, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
The fate of the Miami Companions’ so-called “black book” and whether the names of more than 30,000 clients, job details and sexual preferences would ever be made public was unclear as of late Tuesday, the newspaper said.

Carr’s ex-wife Laurie Carr, a co-owner of the escort service, pleaded guilty Oct. 22 to conspiracy to coerce and entice prostitution and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
