Veniamin Gonikman appeared Friday for arraignment in U.S. District Court in Detroit.
A judge ordered the proceedings to resume Wednesday after an attorney for the naturalized U.S. citizen from Ukraine said he needed an interpreter who understood and spoke Russian.
Defense lawyer Wally Piszczatowski told federal Magistrate Mark Randon that Gonikman “can converse in the English language,” but needs an interpreter for more detailed discussions about the case and charges.
Randon also ordered that Gonikman remain in custody pending a separate detention hearing Wednesday.
Gonikman, 55, consented last month in a New York courtroom to be sent to Michigan to face the charges.
Court documents allege Gonikman was using a fake Russian passport while living in Ukraine in recent years. Officials there arrested him in on immigration …

DETROIT (AP) – A former fugitive accused of being a member of a violent ring that lured Eastern European women to the United States and forced them to become strippers will have his arraignment continued.
Veniamin Gonikman’s arraignment was adjourned Friday during his appearance in federal court in Detroit and will resume Wednesday, when a detention hearing also will be held.
Gonikman’s defense lawyer, Wally Piszczatowski, requested a Russian interpreter for his client, claiming the naturalized U.S. citizen born in Ukraine only speaks broken English.
Authorities say Gonikman used a fake Russian passport while living in Ukraine. Officials there arrested him Jan. 26 and ordered his deportation.
The Associated Press reported on the case last year in a lengthy investigation of the exploitation of a U.S. cultural exchange program.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Ex-fugitive to face hearing on smuggling exotic dancers
February 25, 2011 at 11:36 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No CommentsGonikman took another flight to Detroit today aboard a plane operated by the U.S. Marshals Service.
The federal probe dates to 2005 after two women escaped.
Between 2001 and 2005, a group of Wayne County men smuggled Eastern European women into the country by operating a company called Beauty Search Inc., according to prosecutors. The Livonia company promised women jobs and a better life.
But the women worked 12 hours a day and all of their proceeds were taken by Gonikman and his associates, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The indictment and other court papers allege that the women gave the co-conspirators more than $1 million of their earnings.
At least 10 women were forced to work as exotic dancers at Detroit-area strip clubs, held against their will and sexually assaulted, according to court records.

Detroit Adult Entertainment: 25th Anniversary ‘Les Miserables’ to play Fisher Theatre
February 25, 2011 at 2:36 pm | In Detroit adult entertainment | No CommentsThe stage-musical version of Victor Hugo’s 1200-page novel follows Jean Valjean (Lawrence Clayton) from 1815, when he’s paroled from galley slavery for stealing a loaf of bread, to the ill-fated 1832 student uprising in Paris. Over all that time, Valjean is relentlessly hounded by the unyielding police inspector Javert (Andrew Varela) for violating his parole.
Neither Valjean nor Javert is a multi-dimensional character, but Clayton and Varela portray them intensely. Together, they carry the bulk of the drama in their music, and both sing the roles with resounding authority. Clayton turns Valjean’s lyrical “Bring Him Home” into a heart-rending aria, and Varela mines the depths of Javert’s despair in his “Soliloquy.” (Reversing roles would not be a stretch; Varela played Valjean on Broadway and on tour.)
There are robust contributions from the singing ensemble, appearing as galley slaves, prostitutes, freedom-fighters and townsfolk. The student rebellion at the barricades, the rousing “One Day More,” raises the bar on choral dynamics.
Detroit Strip Clubs: Controversial ex-Duke lacrosse player owes IRS $6.5M; lawyer calls it mistake
February 24, 2011 at 8:25 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No CommentsThe lien lists Seligmann and New York City accountant David Weiss, with whom the Seligmann family consulted several years ago, Emery said.
“This is quite obviously a mistake..,” Emery said. “We will get it corrected. The whole thing is very weird and makes no sense.”
Emery would not elaborate on the mistake.
“It’s just a flat-out mistake,” Emery wrote.
Weiss, whose name and Manhattan office address is listed on the tax lien, did not return a phone call or e-mail seeking comment.
Emery represents Seligmann in a federal lawsuit against the city of Durham, N.C. The case is pending.
Seligmann was suspended after being indicted in spring 2006 on charges of rape, kidnapping and sexual offense. The charges came after a woman told police she was attacked while working as a stripper at a March 2006 team party.

When factories close, many could be led to believe that the story ends there. Clemens, through patience and research, shows the reader what happens behind the locked doors, which consisted of some of the dirtiest work imaginable.
“At the end of the day, some guys would strip down to their underwear in the lot, removing their work clothes so as not to get their car’s interior dirty or dirtier,” Clemens wrote.
He went on to describe “the goop” from their boots “like little boys with sticks scraping shit from their shoes.”
The people dismantling Budd range from men who once worked for the facility, a former bouncer for a strip club, a Bosnian immigrant and the “Arkansas Boys,” a group of riggers.
Detroit Adult Entertainment: Former Detroit FBI agent’s books possess the ring of truth
February 20, 2011 at 8:37 am | In Detroit adult entertainment | No Comments… It’s probably more nonfiction than fiction,” Lindsay says, “although it’s not very well written. But I wanted to tell the world how screwed up FBI management was. It turned out, nobody cared.”
Lindsay’s law enforcement background adds a texture of authenticity to his narratives. At one point, Vail tells a colleague about a woman’s murder they’ve tied to the killings of several prostitutes: “As we learned in Detroit, a surviving victim is still the best way to find out who’s killing hookers.” They track down a woman who survived an attack, and through her trace their way back to the killer.
“Actually I learned that from a number of cases. That’s how the Green River murders were solved, Ted Bundy’s cases, and that’s certainly how we got Benjamin Atkins,” Lindsay says. “If someone is killing a lot of them, (prostitutes) are pretty tough, chances are that somebody is going to get away. The problem initially is finding that person.”
