Detroit Escorts: Detroit Police seek public’s help to solve murders of women linked to escort site
February 4, 2012 at 1:37 am | In Detroit escorts | No CommentsDetroit— Police on Friday urged the public and those who’ve used the Internet site backpage.com for escort services to come forward with information in the unsolved murders of four women whose bodies were found in car trunks on the city’s east side in December.
Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee Jr., in a statement Friday, renewed the appeal from law enforcement for tips in the deaths.
Cousins Demesha Hunt, 24, and Renisha Landers, 23, were found Dec. 19 in the trunk of a silver or gray 2009 Chrysler 300 abandoned between two vacant homes in the 14900 block of Promenade. The bodies of two others, Natasha Curtis, 29, and Vernitha McCrary, 29, were found Dec. 25 in the trunk of McCrary’s white 1997 Buick LeSabre sedan in the 14900 block of Lannette. The vehicle had been set on fire. The two locations are only a few blocks apart.
Police say all four deaths may be related because three of the four women had offered adult escort services through the website.

Detroit Escorts: Conference tries to boost awareness of human trafficking in Metro Detroit
January 22, 2012 at 7:37 am | In Detroit escorts | No CommentsSuburban communities such as Southfield, Birmingham, Troy and Canton Township can be home to these prostitution rings, FBI Victim Specialist Nicole McGee said.
“The majority of our victims are not from Detroit,” she said.
Young girls can be involved without parents knowing, she said. Some leaders of these rings allow girls to go home every night with a threat not to tell anyone.
“Unfortunately a lot of human traffic situation happened right under our nose,” McGee said. “It does not have to be a child that something has happened to them. It could be a child that has suffered from low self-esteem.”
The youngest girl the FBI has rescued from the Detroit area was 12, Berchtold said. She was posted on Backpage, a website that got attention after three of four women found dead in Detroit last month were found to have posted adult escort ads on the site.

(CNN) — Authorities have identified three of the four women found dead this month in two incidents in Detroit, an investigator with the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office said Friday.
Three of the women have been linked to a website that accepts ads for escort services, police have said.
In the latest case, one of the two women found early Christmas Day in the trunk of a car that had been set afire was identified as Vernithea McCrary, 28, the investigator said.
The second victim remains unidentified, said the investigator, who asked not to be identified because he is not allowed to speak on the record to the news media.

Detroit Escorts: Serial Killer May Be Targeting Detroit Escorts, Police Say
December 27, 2011 at 7:37 pm | In Detroit escorts | No CommentsPaul DeCailly, a Tampa, Fla.-based attorney who represents escort services in court, said he doesn’t believe that Backpage.com could be held liable for providing a service that brings people together. He said that that a newspaper, for example, wouldn’t be held liable for a personal ad placed in its pages.
“I don’t think that throwing in the term `escort’ in this particular situation changes the outcome of potential liability,” DeCailly said.
He noted that the killings come amid government efforts to stamp out the use of the Internet for arranging escorts.
…
He said the women may have been killed elsewhere and their bodies dumped, a common way that serial killers operate. He noted that online ads for escort services are risky for those involved because they’re dealing with strangers. And he said the police warnings for caution might not be heeded.

Detroit Escorts: Detroit police treating two pairs of deaths as linked
December 27, 2011 at 7:37 pm | In Detroit escorts | No CommentsSix days earlier, on December 19, the bodies of two other women were found in the trunk of a car parked at a vacant dwelling, Detroit police said.
While autopsy results, including toxicology tests, are not complete, “we are proceeding as if this is two murder scenes,” he said.
Backpage representatives have been cooperating with police, who plan to get search warrants and trace computer Internet Protocol addresses and cell phone numbers in an attempt “to start putting this puzzle together,” the police chief said.
Postings on the escort section of the website cost $1. Referring to the advertisements on the website as “borderline prostitution,” Godbee said that his priorities lie elsewhere. “Right now, we want to get to the bottom of how these four individuals passed away, and who had a hand in their demise,” he said.
