To our dismay, the Motown Museum is closed on Sundays, but dinner was waiting for us at Asim’s house in Ferndale: daal, brown rice and salad. Asim = Awesome. He fed us several times, housed us, made tea for us, set up the show and became my new favorite person. The show was at a place called The Loving Touch, which used to be a massage parlor and still has the original (suggestive?) flashing signs above the stage area (which I’m told usually houses a foosball table). It also has a green corner with a glass ceiling and wall plants. There are about ten pool tables and a bar with half-price drinks for bands that amounted to next to nothing compared to D.C. prices. We drank many WAB Raspberry Blonde ales that are brewed on that same block.

And yet here he is, tied down with obligations, keeping the flame of hope alight in the core of his hometown, a city consumed by a bizarre lovehate relationship with itself, especially its downtown.
Maybe it will be different this time. The kiddie bars, massage parlours and late-night violence that took up so much of Horwitz’s first term as DWBIA chairman have slipped from the spotlight with dwindling cross-border traffic following the introduction of strict passport requirements by U.S. authorities.

While the court decision could mean the legalization of brothels within a year, Francis said Windsor will “use all the tools available to us” – including zoning restrictions and licensing – to prevent them from going anywhere where they could be in conflict with other uses, whether residential, commercial, schools or churches.

Human trafficking does not only occur in major U.S. cities. Toledo is the number one recruiting hub for human trafficking in the US.
The Zonta Club of Grand Rapids reported, “Michigan ranks 13th in the nation for the number of sex trafficking victims.”
Flores said Michigan’s proximity to Canada makes it easy for sex traffickers to make people disappear. “The biggest problem for Michigan is you have international borders,” she said.
Traffickers threaten, manipulate or blackmail their victims for commercial sex or labor. Among victims of human trafficking, 3 percent are kidnapped, 35 percent are sold by family members and 62 percent are tricked by another person.
The majority of victims of human trafficking are female, however, 20 percent are men and boys.
Sex trafficking is prevalent in strip clubs, “massage parlors” and rest and truck stops. Forced labor also often occurs in nail salons and ethnic restaurants.

Warren’s law director Gregory Hicks said that just because police don’t know about it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. “They are under-manned, they have a limited scope, limited ability. Just saying that this one department isn’t investigating it that’s like saying well homeland security isn’t investigating either at the moment,” said Gregory Hicks. Rich is arguing the city shouldn’t limit the massage parlors‘ hours of operation. Some ads for the parlors said that they are open 24-hours. Rich is also fighting the increase in licensing fees and training hours for massage parlor workers. He wants a judge to force a temporary restraining order on the new law.

Recovery Spa on East Maple Road probably won’t be reopening any time soon. At Monday’s meeting, City Council voted to revoke a 2011 massage parlor license at Recovery Spa. The vote affirmed the city’s decision to close the business last December after employees were charged with prostitution and police discovered several other ordinance violations. Recovery Spa has submitted an application for a license renewal and the city has 60 days to approve it, pending a background investigation and the adjudication process.
