Detroit Strip Clubs: Cox: Manoogian rumor implausible

The attorney general visited the Daily Press & Argus offices Tuesday to talk about his campaign for governor, the day after a Detroit-area television station reported that Detroit resident Wilson Kay Jr. said in a July 13 affidavit that Cox attended the Manoogian mansion party.
Channel 4 WDIV reported Kay’s affidavit stated Cox received a lap dance from an exotic dancer at the never-proven 2002 party held by then-Mayor and now-imprisoned Kwame Kilpatrick.
Cox denied being at the party and said he has never set foot inside the Manoogian mansion.
But Cox did investigate whether there had been a party, and eventually concluded that “the party has all the earmarks of an urban legend.”
Still, his campaign for governor has been dogged by criticisms that he conducted a hurried investigation of the party and its alleged connection to the murder of stripper Tamara Greene, who supposedly danced at the party.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Cox denies new allegations about Manoogian mansion party

July 28, 2010 at 10:01 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

As AG, Cox concluded that the party, which allegedly resulted in the death of stripper Tamara Greene, was an urban legend that never actually took place. But attorneys for the Greene family have long maintained that Cox’s conclusions were a convenient whitewash to cover up the fact that he was at the mansion during the party.
Greene family attorney Norman Yatooma announced Monday that he had a signed affidavit from Wilson Kay Jr., a member of an unnamed motorcycle gang allegedly hired to handle security at the party. That affidavit reportedly says that Kay saw Carlita Kilpatrick, wife of imprisoned former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, assault Greene with a table leg after the dancer performed a lap dance on her husband.
The document also alleges that Cox was at the party and received a lap dance from another stripper. Cox vehemently denies those allegations:

Detroit Strip Clubs: Lawyer seeks to depose biker in slain dancer suit

July 28, 2010 at 10:01 am | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

Detroit — An attorney for the family of a slain exotic dancer says he may ask a federal judge to compel the deposition of a biker who says he worked security at a stripper party at the Manoogian Mansion in 2002.

In a sworn affidavit leaked to the news media Monday, Kay said he and members of his motorcycle club worked security at a Manoogian party where he saw former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s wife Carlita assault Greene. Kay also said Attorney General Mike Cox, who was then an assistant Wayne County prosecutor, was a guest at the party and received a lap dance from a stripper.

Greene, a stripper who was linked to a rumored Manoogian party in the fall of 2002, was shot to death in Detroit on April 30, 2003. Her family is suing the city and Kilpatrick, alleging they obstructed her murder investigation for political reasons.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Mike Cox campaign memo criticizes ’smear attacks’

Sandler blasted Kay’s comments in the affidavit, details of which were first reported by WDIV-TV in Detroit on Monday.
“Yesterday, a five-time felon put out a string of lies based on supposed incidents from eight years ago,” he said in the memo. The campaign released state police records showing Kay had convictions for weapons, drug and arson charges.
During the investigation by the attorney general’s office, Cox issued 90 subpoenas, questioned nearly 120 witnesses and pored over 10,000 pages of documents; his investigation ended after five weeks.
At the time, Cox said his office only was looking into the alleged party and whether Kilpatrick’s police bodyguards had crashed city vehicles while driving drunk and received overtime for hours not worked. His office also investigated rumors that the mayor’s wife beat a stripper.

The affidavit was given to an attorney suing the city of Detroit over a stripper’s unsolved murder. The affidavit says guests at the party included Cox, who was then an assistant prosecutor in the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. Cox described the claims as ludicrous.
Stu Sandler, Cox’s campaign manager, said in a statement that City Councilman Gary Brown, who won a whistle-blower suit against Kilpatrick after Brown lost his job for looking into the rumored Manoogian party and other allegations, described Kay’s allegations as “absolutely not” credible.

Greene, a stripper who was linked to the rumored party at the mayor’s official residence in the fall of 2002, was shot to death in Detroit on April 30, 2003. Her family is suing the city and Kilpatrick, alleging they obstructed her murder investigation for political reasons.

Kay said he saw Cox receiving a “lap dance” from a stripper and saw the former mayor’s wife, Carlita Kilpatrick, assault Greene at the party, punching her and striking her with a leg from a broken table.

WDIV, the Detroit Free Press and Fox 2 report attorney Norman Yatooma has obtained a sworn affidavit from a motorcycle club member who says he worked security at the party and saw Cox receive a lap dance and Carlita Kilpatrick assault stripper Tamara “Strawberry” Greene.

Detroit Strip Clubs: Should the Kilpatricks be excused from giving deposition?

July 26, 2010 at 5:24 pm | In Detroit strip clubs | No Comments

Detroit, MI- Carlita Kilpatrick and father of the former mayor of Detroit, Bernard Kilpatrick filed a request in U.S. District Court in Detroit on Sunday in response to deposition requests by a lawyer for the family of the stripper, Tamara Greene, who was killed in a drive-by shooting in April 2003. In their request, they’re asking the judge to quash the subpoena.
Both Kilpatricks has given reason for not wanting to be deposed. Carlita stated that her testimony could be incriminating information against her husband, who is in a federal prison in Milan on state probation violation charges. Meanwhile Kwame’s father, Bernard wants to invoke his 5th Amendment privileges for self incrimination reasons.
The attorney for Carlita Kilpatrick stated, “Due to the ongoing criminal case in the state of Michigan and the pending federal indictment of her spouse … in a separate federal tax matter, any information given could adversely affect that matter.” The Kilpatricks were to be deposed in Texas on Aug. 5-6.
