Detroit Adult Entertainment: ACLU sues Detroit Police over raid

Two legislators, State Rep. Gabe Leland, D-Detroit, and State Sen. Tupac Hunter, D-Detroit, are working to change Michigan law to require police to file charges against those whose vehicles they seized. The proposed legislation also would require prosecutors to release seized vehicles at no charge if the defendants are found not guilty.
In addition, former Wayne County Sheriff’s lieutenant Walter Epps, a candidate for Wayne County Sheriff, said if elected he would stop deputies from seizing vehicles without also filing charges.
The News found cases where members of the Wayne County Morality United seized vehicles without charging the owners with crimes. In one instance, a Southgate man’s SUV was seized after a brief conversation with a deputy posing as a prostitute, even though the officer wrote in her report that the man hadn’t solicited her.
