The Great Lakes 70s, which are actually 68 feet long, generally are the queens of the show. Since the owners of boats this size generally have fairly deep pockets, they’ve placed some limits on themselves, such as no more than four new sails each year, to avoid what they call “the arms race.”
“We kind of try to control things for the benefit of the class,” said Lance Smotherman of Harrison Township, owner of Detail, which was second in the GL 70 Class in the Chicago race. “It’s a very manageable boat, yet it’s big and fast and cool.”
Stripes, owned by Bill Martin of Ann Arbor, placed first in the class in the Chicago race.
Finally, Talisman and Courtesan have royal pedigrees.
Talisman, owned by Bruce Aikens of West Bloomfield, formerly was owned by the King of Sweden.
Courtesan formerly was owned by the King of Spain, and is now co-owned by Dane Christy of Bloomfield Hills and David Lockhart of Grosse Pointe Park.
