Detroit Strip Clubs: Birds of a Feather Wear Bad Costumes Together

At Skate America in November, Lysacek flapped his arms and seemed unintentionally cartoonish for a world champion and Olympic favorite with such a clean, elegant line. The costume was the latest from Vera Wang, but it screamed vintage Heckle and Jeckle.
“It looked like he spent the summer on a turkey farm,” said Jef Billings, a renowned skating costume designer.
Skating has reached the point where “Blades of Glory” seems less like satire and more like cinéma vérité. Lilac vinyl jumpsuits, sheer tops, off-the-shoulder necklines, corsets, tassels, feathers and fur are all the rage. And then there are the women.
“I think it’s hurting the sport,” said Billings, who has designed costumes for Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill, Michelle Kwan and Sarah Hughes. “Sometimes you feel like you’ve gone to the circus instead of figure skating.”
Or as Dick Button put it, if he wanted to see theatrical strippers, he would take in a performance of “Gypsy.”
