Detroit –Detroit may yet ban alcohol and lap dances at strip clubs, but the controversial crackdown is likely in limbo until next year.
Before a crowd of about 200, City Council members feuded briefly Friday. But too few showed up to introduce regulations in time to vote on changes Nov. 20, the last day before a recess until year’s end. That likely will delay the issue until January, when five new council members come on board.
“At this point, it really is an issue for the next council,” said Council President Kenneth Cockrel Jr.
For much of the year, religious and community leaders have urged the council to get tough on the clubs. But the city already is facing several lawsuits related to its regulation of them. The possible crackdown also would outlaw VIP rooms and force topless dancers to wear opaque pasties.
