Government: Sam Riddle ‘political pimp’
(AP) DETROIT – The government has given its closing argument in the first trial of a long-running investigation of corruption in Detroit.
Assistant U.S. Attorney David Gardey on Monday said political consultant Sam Riddle is “a political pimp” who “sold ex-councilwoman Monica Conyers’ votes to the highest bidder.” Gardey says “in Sam Riddle’s Detroit, the city is for sale.”
Riddle is accused of working with Conyers to shake down people for cash if they had business at the city council or Detroit pension board. A strip club executive says Riddle was wearing a gravy-stained track suit when he sought $25,000.
Closing arguments continue in federal court. Riddle’s lawyers say he was a legitimate consultant just seeking business.
