Rebuttal: Regulate strip clubs to protect Detroit
The contention of the Feb. 18 editorial (”Clothes off: Ministers’ attempt to take the naked out of strip clubs will kill taxpaying businesses”) that Detroit’s regulations for sexually oriented businesses have “worked reasonably well to mitigate their negative effects on the community” demonstrates that editorial board members do not live near any such businesses.

Detroit has less than 10 percent of Michigan’s population, but nearly half of the state’s strip clubs. In part, Oakland County became one of the most affluent counties in the country after then-Prosecutor L. Brooks Patterson targeted strip clubs by impeding their operation. The clubs often would sue and win, but the cost of litigation eventually forced them to leave.

The serving of alcohol makes strip clubs a target for criminals — drunken patrons will not report crimes committed against them for fear of being discovered and are more likely to commit lewd sex acts outside of the clubs (which happens a lot in Detroit).
