What most struck Caward was that “normal” people would enter the shop and reveal things about their sex lives they wouldn’t dare tell even their closest friends.
“Woman would come in and talk in depth about what kind of dildo they needed, how big it had to be and how it felt . . . almost like you were selling them a toaster,” he said.
The best stories and anecdotes eventually became part of Caward’s first novel, Love Machine, a love story set among many of the things Kings Cross is famous for: strip clubs and drunks, spruikers and amateur criminals, kebab shops and homeless shelters. And, of course, an underground sex shop.
