Riddle’s Detroit corruption trial nears a close
Associated Press – February 8, 2010 4:14 AM ET
DETROIT (AP) – Closing arguments are next in the first trial in the government’s long-running investigation of corruption in Detroit government.
Jurors have heard many witnesses talk about political consultant Sam Riddle and his work on behalf of Detroit ex-councilwoman Monica Conyers. They’ve also heard taped phone calls in which she tells him to get her some “loot.”
Riddle is accused of working with Conyers to shake down people for cash if they had business at the city council or Detroit pension board. A strip club executive says Riddle was wearing a gravy-stained track suit when he sought $25,000.
Closing arguments are set for Monday in federal court. Riddle’s lawyers say he was a legitimate consultant just seeking business.
